F.E.A.R.: a next generation first person shooter
WARNING: SCARY PICTURES
Well why the fuck not. This is about as best as I can contribute at this point and time. Monolith Productions, the people behind (apparently) several game engines, as well as the upcoming MMORPG The Matrix Online, have put together a first person shooter. A, next generation, first person shooter. Now, in the following year since Half-Life 2 first appeared on the E3 showroom floor, not to mention Doom 3 a little while before it, a lot of game companies have made a lot of head way with their graphics engines, to the point where they look just as good, if not better, than what Valve or id has put out. And, perhaps in F.E.A.R.'s case, a degree or two better. The engine uses of Monolith's own engines, I think. So, uh, it looks really great. Yeah. The story . . . is kind of a mystery at this moment. What is known: An unknown "terrorist" orginazation has recently stormed a very high-brow technology corporation, which happens to be located in this ENORMOUS high-rise. The government quickly sends in CT specialists Delta Force to quell the situation, but apparently there were "complications." Two hours later, you haven't heard from them since. You, being F.E.A.R., First Encounter Assault and Recon, are now sent in not to try and rescue hostages or find some M.I.A.'s or something, but to just find out . . . what happened. According to your chief, "those gauys gert tern ta peeces in therr." Delta Force is sending in more operatives to lock things down, and your character, first day on the job apparently, gets put right into the shit. You're battling heavily armed soldiers (terrorists) from the second you get dropped from your chopper on the helipad of said high-brow technology company. The locale, so far, has taken place totally within the confines of the nameless technology building, in the trailer anyway. I have seen screenshots where your riding shotgun with your buddy in a squadcar, back down on level one. I guess you could say it's your typical corridor shooter, almost. It's all very dark, square, but pretty, and firefight ready. Ok, so what do we have so far? Well, for those who care so much that you have kept reading, we have: - an extreme solid game engine, which has:: +graphics on par with Doom 3 (character models actually look eerily similar, perhaps it just doesn't get any better? o_O) +realistic physics engine, ragdolls, shell casings, the environment itself, the damn works +special effects out the wazoo's arse. motion blurring, environement warping, various particle effects, lighting effects, oh my god it looks so reaaaaaaal +sound crisp and crystal clear. not sure on what type of hardware it handles, but, damn, it'll get your blood flowing. - somewhat cliched story, but opens up for a whole world of possiblities. - Half-Life - The Ring yes. From what I seen from my uber-eleet Gamespot trailer, the game could best be described as a mixture of Half-Life, and The Ring. And I'm not just sheltered and reaching for the first two decent horror-themed articles I could find. ![]() ![]() Yeah, then just imagine I copied the first image URL back again. That's kind of what it looks like. That girl does some other freaky, freaky shit. I won't spoil it, unless you so inquire about it later. No one knows that much, but apparently, this girl was the fate of Delta Force, as well as the poor workers of Technolo-co where the terrorists took over (and YOU currently are). Hmm, what would a ghost girl want at a technology company. . ? And why is she making people die horrible gruesome deaths? Hmm . . . the possibilities are endless! Well, not really, but it is pretty cool. In my opinion. Oh yeah, the deaths. There're bound to be a lot of them, what with SA-DA-CO walking around, and you being an elite counter-terrorist weapon. Weapons . . . there are four so far: an awesome rifle/sub-machine gun with appended scope and flashlite, which goes on everytime you point it at the dark, your standard boomstick shotgun, nades (environment warp put especially well when these go off), and, oh yeah, YOURSELF. The game is TRUE first person, and your not body is not just a camera moving about a game world. When you look down, you can see your feet, your shadow, and of course your gun. When you pull off a BADASS DROPKICK, the camera and the rest of your body reacts in such a way that is REALISTIC and totally cool looking. I'd take a picture of it but you know. Maybe later. So, yeah, that's my long thing. It looks to be extremely awesome, extremely scary, and that extreme app you've been looking for to put your totally extreme (sorry) next-generation prepped tricked out system to work. After HL2 and Doom3 of course. I might have gone overboard, but I don't mind. It's not BROKEN by any means. :) |

I wasn't initially impressed by what I heard of this game, but those screenshots... make me very interested.
Though I'll never be able to run it on my computer, of course. Hope there's an Xbox version coming or something. P.S.: You're doing great so far, trooper! |

Yes, initially I didn't see what seperated this from the rest of the next-gen crowd, but the girl really did it for me.
It plays its cards right, and it could really, well, be something. |

GOOD GOD, it looks good. The three gameplay trailers are 350 MB combined, but they're very, VERY impressive. Think RINGU + GHOST IN THE SHELL + HALF-LIFE. Again, I'll never be able to run it on my computer, but I'm spiritually looking more forward to it than Half-Life 2. I was genuinely scared by the scene in the "anger room". |

I am a huge NOLF fan, but Contract Jack was pretty much shit.
And let's not forget Tron 2.0 among their accolades. Not a Nolf, but still a good game. |

Is that girl walking on the ceiling in pic #4? That's rad.
Also: this clearly isn't as good as DOOM3 because you can actually see what's happening. |

Didn't that weird box-pushing 'Jurassic Park' FPS thing have a body for the player? I remember an arm, and tits, at the very least.
