The heyday of Dan Hibiki

Upon these boards, I have learned that Capcom's resident fighting failure, Dan Hibiki, is considered by many a joke that's outlived its value.
Fair enough, really.
I still like Dan, and see him as reasonably endearing, but I can see why others don't find him funny any more, or just see him as a waste of space in games where a more useful character would be a better inclusion.

So, I've started this thread to ask you all when you thought Dan was at his best.

For me, Dan charmed me most, not in any beat-em-up, but in Capcom's puzzle game, Super Puzzle Fighter II.
In that, he was a rolling, screaming, crying, oyaji-ing ball of over the top fun. I loved the cut-scene where he challenged you before Akuma turned up and sent Dan rolling and babbling away, and the other intermissions where he turned up were pretty funny and made the poor fool hopelessly endearing. In fact, Dan had a pretty good sprite in that, with his big cheery grin & standard-issue, bushy Shoto-eyebrows.

To me, it was the definitive Dan Hibiki appearance, with him being a rolling ball of explosive exuberence and silliness.

When I used to whoop people's asses in the arcades, finishing them off with a Level 3 Hisshou Buraiken :supergrin

The Raging Suicide he had in the Vs. games was badass too if you were lucky enough to nail it and kill them with it, IMO.

I like him in the Street Fighter Comic books when he offers to teach Sakura if she can beat him and she totally owns him, so they take him, unconscious, to the hospital and the receptioninst is like "Mr. Hibiki AGAIN!!" Pretty funny stuff. I know people who love Dan though, it is fun to whoop people with him cause it's generally embarassing for them, but I still can't say he's one of my favorites.

Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter, for his ending alone:

He also had some great quotes in Alpha 3, but in other games it just seems like they were trying too hard to make him funny. Gadoshokoken from SVC Chaos was funny for about a second.

ICEMAN299 10th April 2004 09:01 AM

That ending has always seemed to be a little bit on the disturbing side.

Dan is a great character. My favorite version of him has to be his MOTM form. The greatness of his sprite there is only surpassed by his Super Puzzle/Gem Fighter sprite IMO, but what makes him really lovable is his ending, and this:

Dan has a place in my heart simply because the first time I did his Super Taunt in SFA2, my (human) opponent held :b: during the entire thing, expecting some kind of strike to come at any second, then finally did a Roundhouse right at the very end with the thumbs-up pose. THAT is how you humiliate a turtle.

For actual Dan appearance, I'd say the Comic. At that first moment when Sakura punches him in the stomach. That was really funny.

But yeah, nothing's better than beating someone in Puzzle Fighter with nothing but red blocks. Hell, it's even funny when they get that one red breaker that just sits there until your counters turn to blocks.

Go play Art of Fighting and beat it with Ryo. Or click this link, so Mr. Karate won't kick your ass.

SLĄDE 10th April 2004 11:56 AM

Well, we all already know that Dan is a ripoff/amalgamation or Robert Garcia and Ryo Sakazaki (Of SNK fame, and if you don't know, then you have no right being here on a fighting game forum), in retaliation for them "Ripping off" Ryu in the form of Ryo. Did this little exchange of tomfoolery go any further? Like were there other ripoffs/spoofs? I could probably look into it myself, but I went to sleep at 5 this morning, and am too tired/lazy.

well, to this day, yuri still parodies typical "shoto" specials even though capcom hasn't made a fighter in YEARS

Yeah! How could I forget about the Raging Spaz (Same motion as Raging Demon, or as my friend calls it, "The Six Demon Bag")!?! It was in like 2002 right?*Slaps forhead* I feel like less of a man now.

It's not a Dan Hibiki Appreciation Thread without you know who!

Anyways, my favorite incarnation of Dan was SVC Chaos... It was the only version of him that could give you a legit challenge! That or his SVC: Match Of The Millenium incarnation.

Dan is my favorite character since he's the epitome of loser... I bow to the failure that is Dan Hibiki!

Why Dan Hibiki is the top man of fighting games have a sense of humor....

Dan in SFA3 packs a mean air fierce punch. It's actually possible to kick serious ass with him.

EvilNeil 10th April 2004 01:07 PM

I liked him most in SFA2. He was his own character for the first time - his SFA1 presence little more than a dry run made up of other shoto sprites, and the concept was still vaguely fresh.

Don't get me wrong, as the Friends of the Earth of joke re-use I don't tire of things that amuse me quickly, but I still feel that the whole thing was better back in the day when you could go "omg I beat you with DAN!" and it would be genuinely shameful, and there was no chance whatsoever of someone sneaking up and going "well actually in MvSFvCvSNKvVFvDOAX he's really powerful blah blah".

CGrascal 10th April 2004 01:17 PM

I think Dan was best in Pocket Fighter. A game as cooky and outreageously silly like that suits him just perfectly.
