As far as TokyoPop goes, Battle Royale is tops.
:O Is there a BAttle Royale manga? I must fucking get it :D (after getting all AYA volumes :bigtran: )... GTO will arrive here officially (and KareKano is being published here, already), so I totally discard them in my wish list.

And avoid the Cowboy Bebop stuff.

:O Is there a BAttle Royale manga? We've been discussing it for about a year now in the Battle Royale thread.

TODE said I must not read, and I won't O_OWell, you know, if you see it in a bookstore, look for yourself. But I myself was not impressed.

There are actually two different Bebop manga. One is called "Shooting Star" Bebop and was made before the show aired on TV or something like that. Anyway, the characters look much different than they do on TV. But I consider the two series to be about equal in quality.

Not "required" reading by any means, though.

I do like it that you're taking directions, though, KK. :smalltran

Bookstore? How generous... here, this kind of stuff is only available in comic stores... you know, "kids' stuff", rofl.

Not "required" reading by any means, though.
Which part or episode of Cowboy Bebop is required to be seen? :P

And BTW, I once read a part of the Cowboy Bebop manga (one chapter :/ ), and everything looks funnier and less crude. Probably that's the reason lots of people don't like it.

I do like it that you're taking directions, though, KK. :smalltran

TODE
12th January 2005, 03:22 AM
Never liked Ikkitousen, to be honest :/Yeah, I saw the anime and didn't really care for it.

Here's a tip for finding a good manga: The really good ones don't usually have an anime tie-in, meaning an anime based on the manga. For a manga to be made into anime, it is usually a mainstream success. Not to say that mainstream hits are for idiots or anything like that. But think of it like seeing a critically acclaimed movie instead going to see whatever Will Smith is in.

So if you haven't heard of the cartoon, then you should give it a second look. Also, if it's under Viz's "Editor's Choice" or old "PULP" titles, that tells you that someone there thought it was good enough to publish over here without merchandise/cross-over support. Same goes for anything from Dark Horse with the Studio Proteus name on it.

Your first assignment: VAGABOND by Takehiko Inoue, better known for his mainstream hit Slam Dunk.

http://zettai.biz/pic/quizzes/vagabond.jpg

It's a retelling of the legend of Japan's famous sword-saint Miyamoto Musashi. It is printed in the old standard pre-TOKYOPOP manga size, with full translation and every color section printed in color, all for only $9.95.

Read a couple chapters of Buzzer Beater. Its pretty interesting how its made. It was originally made to be read left-to-right, so its not flipped (you can tell if you know how to read the sound effects), the chapters are 6 pages long, and its all in colour! Mind you, the colouring looks nowhere near as nice as those Vagabond covers but its better then nothing. :D

Oh and did I mention that REAL is about people in wheelchairs and basketball? Despite how dumb it sounds, its really, really powerful stuff. The story line is really excellent and the three volumes i've read of that kicks the 20-so volumes of Slam Dunk (thats how much i've read so far :o) right in the balls. You can get the first volume here (http://www.omanga.net/?cid=b_real) (the volume 2 and 3 links are broken ;_;), but if you want the rest, just ask me on MSN or get it on IRC :smalltran

I like Blade of the Immortal a lot, too.

My only problem is that a new volume only comes out 2-3 times a year because Dark Horse still thinks there's a market for single-issues.

If they can put out Lone Wolf and Cub every month, they can certainly pick up the pace a little bit.

Blaze

Blade of the Immortal is entertaining, but not captivating.

Vagabond, however is, easily the best manga series I have ever had the pleasure of reading. I used to debate it, but after reading the latest volumes I've come to terms that it is beyond everything else I've ever read by leaps and bounds in every aspect that I can think of. I find no flaws, nothing lacking.

I can't recommend it enough. Good eye, TODE.

I must dissagree. Sure, BotI may seem pretty shallow at first, but you'd be suprised how deep the story gets in just about every volume over 2. Theres more to the swastica-pattern killing you see. If you just put some time into it, you'll realize that the characters are very well portrayed, as well as being full of life. An what goes on with the Itto-Ryu is some really interesting shit. If you have doubts, just read Volume 11(Beasts). It'll really get to you.

Sorry, just gotta encourage my favorite manga out there.

And Vagabond has always caught my eye, and if what you say is true, I think I'll check it out. I needs something to tide me over till the New BotI comes out(as said, freakin Dark Horse, the wait kills me).

I don't think it matters. Me, I did it a kind of stupid way - I saw about 5 episodes ages ago, then read the manga, then saw the whole anime all the way through.

It's not like Dragonball, or Tenjou Tenge where if you've seen/read one, it actually harms the other, no here the two co-exist nicely. Not once did I furiously email Gen Fukunaga to say "lol filler omg u sux."

A warning to my fellow HerVerts: if anybody is interested in picking up the fresh new DVD release of Ghost in the Shell 2... don't. Some genius at Dreamworks decided that the english subtitles should double as the closed captioning, so unless you want to watch the film in Japanese without subs, you'll have to put up with a lot of [helicopter approaching], [faint footsteps], and my personal favorite, [singing in Japanese]. Extremely irritating, and occasionally ruins the mood. I'm very, very disappointed... I was looking forward to having this film in my collection, but I guess that won't be happening now. Seems pretty good so far for this kind of show, and the mystery of Midori's condition is a nice hook (please don't spoil it for me). REALLY GOOD dub voices. I love Seiji's older sis.

I was wondering, though... does the issue of Seiji using Midori as a wanking-enabler ever come up? or is this like a Ranma 1/2 thing where I shouldn't be thinking about things like that?

Where may I order the DVDs?According to Amazon.com, it's not out until May 17. For videos, Previews never really gives a firm date, usually just the month and a lot of the time it's not the right month (one before or one after). Plus scheduling changes, etc.

Also, if you have the physical copy of Previews, you can tell what month stuff is coming out by reading the spine, it says something like MAY 2005 - FOR PRODUCT SHIPPING IN JULY 2005.

And of course there are the issues of publishers running late or changing their schedule after Previews is printed. www.ComicList.com is the site to look at for seeing when stuff is actually coming out and it updates every week.

I second wanting to know about Elfen Lied. Anybody in Ga that can point me to another rental shop with a decent, if not updated, selection? HoAnime shut their doors in December, and the new shop's taking far too long to finish renovations.

Whilst on recommendations, what about:

Daphne
Steel Angel Kurumi
Sorcerer Hunters

And is that platinum edition of Eva worth it? Best Buy has it for the low, and I am still in the middle of my Huge Project to Replace VHS with DVD. Or will the earlier boxset hold me over?

EvilNeil

Like I said in one of the NGE threads, it depends on how much of an EVA 'mortimer you are.

Personally I think it's fantastic - you won't see or hear the series better, at least until the inevitable HD-DVD Adamantium Edition a few years down the line - the presentation, from the disks themselves, to the boxes, booklet etc. is all absolutely top-notch and the whole thing really finally gives the series the respect it deserves.

I watched Vol 7 on Saturday, finishing off the series, and it was easily worth the full-price I paid for it, IMO.

Your mileage may of course, vary, but if all you have otherwise is the VHS versions, if it is on sale and you can afford it, and you do want to hear six disceet channels of self-loathing - you should go for it.

Steel Angel KurumiSexy, cute, funny, great art, great dub, great extras... it's just got that "pop". :) Both SAK1 and SAK2 are available in a seven-disc brick, I recommend going that route although there are some nifty packaging extras you don't get. (SAK2 isn't so much a sequel as it is a re-telling, and while not as good as SAK1 it does have a lot of girl-loves-girl going on.)

There isn't that much Love Hina inspired crap in the series, period. Off the top of my head, there are about 6 scenes of akward LH-like moments. In the 13 episodes there are, 6 isn't bad at all.

The other stuff is story, latin chant ultra violence and flashbacks.

The violence adds to the series overall feel, so it's not like it's completely out of place. But if you don't like moe-moe characters being ripped in half, then just stop watching it NOW, at episode 3.

- Shinn's a total dick. Like Superman's a total dick.
- Cagalli cries . . . alot.
- Two Lacuses (Lacii?) are better than one.
- Basic Kira Battle Strategy: Show up, Wave around MASSIVE GUNDAM COCK, disappear.
- Murrue yelling out orders in the battle is still INSANELY HOT. :spooge:
- Gil is so terribly and obviously evil i can't help but think its a red herring.
- Mu lives?
- Rau unmasked!
- Stellar = silly bipolar slut.
- Andy's gun arm is the new hotness.
- Talia is hot yelling out orders too, just not as much as Murrue.
- Shinn's still a total dick.
- Rey . . . nothing good happens to giant robot pilots with names like Rey. (ZOMG?)
- The Hawke girls just appear to be Sakura-class Useless™.
- "Haro Haro What the Heck!" Indeed.

I think he means the anime called just Air. Which is natural, since it sucks.

Air Master is, indeed, 27 episodes - odd number, but you'll see why. :(

I saw that Tenjho Tenge box (http://www.rightstuf.com/cgi-bin/catalogmgr/VzZhA1Co0g2VN870hI/browse/item/65264/4/0/0) at Suncoast today. The box itself is nice (Oh! Great artwork, of course), but I was mildly disappointed to see that the adorable art can that comes in it is not full of delicious Pringles. Still, I guess a jigsaw puzzle...could...be nice?

Even though I stopped watching Burst Angel a few episodes in (Jo was cool, the show itself was "meh" at best), the artbox out right now is really kickass. (http://www.rightstuf.com/cgi-bin/catalogmgr/VzZhA1Co0g2VN870hI/browse/item/65503/4/0/0) It looks even better in person. Fuck the show, I want that damned box.

Yeah, I've seen them at Best Buy over here, same for RahXephon. ADV's cheapo boxsets are the greatest. I have the first two, and while the nudity is fun, and the music is quite cool - the animation veers from average, to really, really poor. Honestly, the guys from BIRD studios that animated DBZ could sit and laugh at a couple of the shots in here.

Besides, you read the manga first. That = instant hate for animated spin-offs. I watched the DVDs first, and then downloaded the scans. Much safer.

Good news for all robo fags: Check AnimeSuki and you'll find an episode of SPT Layzner and four (which is actually six when you go to the group's site) episodes of Xabungle, out of the blue (LOL IT'S THEME NIGHT), from Shin Getter. This is the same group who's subbing Ideon, and although they only got two episodes of that so far, two more are promised to be on the way soon. On top of that, they're also going to be doing Heavy Metal L-Gaim. They seem to be convinced that they have, and will continue to have, enough man power to keep all of these going at the same time. I sure hope so. Although knowing how these things usually end up, perhaps I shouldn't get so excited. ;_;

And no, I haven't seen either yet, but this group did a good job with episode two of Ideon (first one has some badly colored font gay bullshit), so I don't expect these to be too bad.

For those of you who may remember, Bandai Entertainment USA licensed Layzner a while ago in the hopes of bringing it over as an old school sub only release. It looks like this died as soon as Gundam lost steam and Bandai hasn't commented on it since, which I suppose is enough for it to be fair game for fansubbing. R.I.P., Sunrise Classics line.

Oh, yeah. If anybody else here likes shoujo, or just character-driven stories, check out Honey and Clover. It's the only anime I've been watching since I, um, forgot to finish Samurai Champloo. Anyway, it's pretty good.

... There's no telling if I'll see the whole series, tho. :x

Under normal circumstances, I'd be joining Underkill, but I admittedly haven't seen the series, so since I can't judge, I'll allow this CCS support for now.

But if I start seeing CCS pairing wars in here--and GOD HELP ME, if I see a Tomoyo/Sakura embargo--I'm nuking the server from orbit to keep the virus from spreading.

Had enough of that shit on shoujoai.com, I did.

CCS is actually pretty quality, I just like using ancient anti-CCS fan insults to easily generate discussion. :D

The only thing is that CCS doesn't have anything that would possibly be relevant to people our age unless they really were a perv or enjoy watching little kids' shows solely because they're Japanese. So yeah, fail either way.

Also, lesbian undertones are useless when said lesbos are only like ten years old. :|

Hey, guys... all Latin America will receive a new anime-based channel called Animax. Is that a good or a bad thing? :3 (http://www.animax-la.com/)

Supposedly, it'll come with all the basic channels from the HBO family (E!, Jetix, Warner Channel, Disney Channel, A&E, History Channel, Sony Channel and AXN), so... o_O if my supposition is true, this channel will be available in the Basic channels of all the Cable-based TV broadcasters that have the basic HBO channels :0

And this is a list of the animes they're (supposedly) going to transmit:

-Prince of Tennis <- interested.
-Hungry Heart Wild Striker
-Hunter x Hunter
-Love Hina
-Vandread <- interested.
-Gatekeepers
-Scryed

Well the thing is, I just bought the second dvd (even though I wasn't exactly thrilled with the first one) and I dunno...on one hand it has points where it could be interesting, but at the same time its just the "Jerk who has the heart of gold and everyone is dumber/weaker then they are" futuristic story told all over again. I can appreciate the slight Jo/Meg innuendo, but I doubt thats gonna go anywhere. Second opinions? Does the show get any better or there's more interesting characters down the line?

I'd add it to my list of things to watch, but the list is running off the bottom of my imaginary paper and soaking into the floor. Let's see...

Zatoichi - 3 movies.

Last Exile - 23 episodes.

King of Bandit Jing - Uh, about 9 episodes I think.

School Rumble - Whole series.

Galaxy Angel - Series one.

Full Metal Panic - some episodes I missed when I watched it first time.

Berserk - Whole series. It's about time to watch it again.

Hajime no Ippo - Ditto.

... hmm, thought I had more to watch. Well, I still need to complete Tales of Symphonia, Baten Kaitos (maybe, I'm not too into it after 6 hours) and randomly waste time enjoying Ninja Gaiden, Doa 2, Chaos Theory and Res 4 perhaps. Not to mention an ongoing watching of Trinity Blood, Speed Grapher and Bleach.

I really, really let too much pile up this time.

Your opinion sucks.

I wanted to see little girls shooting people, not to wallow in pedophilic tension between them and their masters. Out of the 13 eps only the 2 about who killed *spoilar* were really worth it. The whole super Rei assassin and her partner/guardian thing was done better in Noir, if for nothing else than for the simple scientifically proven fact that lesbo tension > pedo tension.

Altho I must say Triad probably didn't know what they were doing when they subbed it, at least I never really got what "conditioning" is and does from their subs.

My opinion of GSG would be considerably higher if the girls had turned against their masters, even if the whole concept breaking free by murdering your boss/double-crossing client is the biggest cliche on assassin stories. On top of me getting the gratification of seeing Jan shot, it'd also been a better plot than just observing the the girls' daily routine of getting shot and ignored/rewarded/conditioned by the godfathers.

Oooh yeah I remeber the umbrella...oh and the Destroys had them to IIRC.
Yeah I noticed the Beamshields on the latest Gundam models, very cool stuff.

Oh MPC=Mega Pariticle Cannon and VSBR=Variable Speed Beam Rifle.
MPCs have been used for Warships(They require a lot of Juice to run) but I was thinking that maybe we would see Mobile Armors or a Mobile Suit use them.
VSBRs were anti-beamshield weapons because of the two modes of mega particle fire, the highvelocity mode that did minimal damage but went through everything but a very dense I-Field. There was also a lowvelocity mode that created a gigantic blast on contact pretty that much killed everything nearby not equipped with a strong barrier.

On an unrelated note...I dunno if I was seeing things but it looked like the Destiny had God Finger lol.

well then, no MS so far have MPCs or VSBRs then, but Destiny basically has God Finger, but its more like something out of Fist of the North Star here:

One thing in Gundam always kinda bothered me...what I thought the millitary(of either side) should do with their pilots that are using mass produced Mobile Suits is I think they should have a "retreat/get the fuck out of Dodge" tactic when an enemy Gundam appears. Or like a "Back up the Gundam on your side" tactic. Seriously, like in GSD, you have pilots using Zakus and Jinns right? They are so not going to win against a freak'n Gundam, no matter how many there are. I mean after seeing a single Gundam basically rip through like an entire fleet of Zaft AND Earth forces, its fucking miller time! I wonder what Kira and other pilots would say or do if someone acutually said "okay" after Kira told them to "stop fighting! lay down your weapons!" However my mind is at ease when I realize, "hey we wouldn't have all those cool explosions without those cheap-ass mechs" lol.

What's that movie where everything turns into spirals!? Could be Korean, but I think it's actually Jap.
Is it as awesome as the back of the box made it seem.
Almost rented on the strength of the J-gal on the cover, but I haven't seen it in there since. Actually made a change to see one of these films that didn't, y'know, actually have a fucking katana wielding posse of grim faced azn men or spooky white eyed junkie dominatrix of similar ethnicity on the front.

Uzumaki. It's pretty good, although --

*obligatory "the manga (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/search-handle-form/202-0947676-1365406) is better" post*

Because it is. Good way to cut your teeth on Japanese horror manga stuff. Junji Ito's done quite a few nifty things - GYO was brilliant (sharks chasing people upstairs in their apartments on mechanical legs = top tier) and I really enjoyed TOMIE as well.

Erm... I stopped reading after "Spirals" and my guess will be Uzumaki?

EDIT: And this is why I should stop I opening up all the threads I want to read in a new window and then going through them one by one... I eventually get PWN3D by new posts I can't see. (;

after getting bored of waiting in between waiting for Seed Destiny eps i started getting my fix from catching Turn A Gundam

while markedly different, its still fun (only seen up to ep 10)

favorite moment: episode 9
i now nominate Sochie Heim as the BEST GUNDAM PILOT ever

she totally made a Gundam KICK ANOTHER MOBILE SUIT IN THE NUTS.

now my problem is that i can't torrent up any more eps. BT's giving me this lame "connection refused" junk ;_;

The only other Ito book I have that you didn't name was Flesh-Colored Horror... it's a compilation of Tomie-level short stories.

MAN Gyo is freaky.

Your bookstores sell manga?

Yes, and a somewhat wide-variety at that. It pales in comparison to the selection offered by the internet, but they have enough to have a "manga" section.

Our bookshops have Dragonball, but that's about it. Not enough for its entirely own section, anyway.

Fuck you guys.

Yeah seriously. There's maybe one or two large bookstores around here that even grudgingly acknowledge that comics can have literary merit, tucking away a small stand with the obligatory stuff (Maus, Blankets, De Avonden (ugh), A Contract With God, etc.) near the back of the store, next to the Star Trek novels. Manga? Pshaw. That's like that Yu-Gi-Oh stuff, right?

I would love it if our bookstores sold excellent manga, especially at half the price. I would endure a mountain of clichéd crap if that meant I could actually buy stuff like Uzumaki and Gyo and 20th Century Boys in a store.

Sounds like London three or four years ago. Nowadays you can walk into many a bookshop/HMV entertainment-type store and find manga of all sorts on the shelves.

We can even manage a walls-worth of anime DVDs now, as well. I'm sure you're not far behind.

And 'Flesh-colored Horror' = ordered.

Has anybody been watching Full Metal Panic, The Second Raid? It's back to the serious combat stuff, so FMP fans should definitely check it out. I'm on episode 3, and it looks to be very, very promising.

Yeah FMP:TSR is freak'n tits.

I love how everything in this show is just so high-quality and most importantly, I love that I'm able to watch another FullPani series.

I didn't really like the first FMP, but I loved Fumoffu. I absolutely hooked on Second Raid though.

Yeah I was kind of dissapointed that they returned to the military stuff after Fumoffu but I have to say TSR is really good. It's what the first season should have been and i'm saying this from watching 4 eps, that says a lot.

Oh and the twins are hawt. *expects doujins of them soon*

Yesterday I watched the first chapter of Maria sama ga miteru... WTF?! Is it a yuri anime, or the girls are simply very... special?

Liked the char design, the BG music and the main girl. Didn't understand what the hell is "Rosa Foetida", "Rosa Gigantea" and the "sisters" thing. Hated the OP and ED.

I LOVE Maria-sama ga Miteru. It's probably in my top 5, if I ever decided to make such a list. It's such a mellow, slow-paced and relaxing anime to watch. And yes, it is a shoujo ai anime. However, it's really unfair to call it just "yuri" stuff, because the relationships in it are very feminine, proper and sisterly. There's none of that kissing or above stuff in Marimite (abbreviation). If you're into shoujo anime, then I think you'd really like Marimite.. but if not, just don't watch any farther.

Lilian gakuen uses a system called "souers" which is French for sister. Basically, an older student finds a girl that's in a lower grade and in the event that they start to like and accept each other, the older gives the younger student their Rosary (the medallian, making them official sisters.

Rosa Foetida = Yellow Rose

Rosa Chinesis = Red Rose

Rosa Gigantea = White Rose

The roses are the Grand Souer of their respective Souer relationships. Below them are the En Boutens (which means "Budding" or Waiting to bloom"). So, in the case of Rose Chinesis (the short Black haired girl who often assumes the position of Gendo Ikari when pondering something), her En Bouten is Sachiko (sama!!!). Sachiko, being the younger sister is generally assumed to be the succeeding Rosa Chinesis, though she would have to win an election first. Now even below that are the Petite Souer, which are the younger sisters of the En Boutens. The next year, when their older sisters become the grand Souers, they become their respective En Boutens.

Just attach the En Bouten after the rose name.

Rosa Chinesis En Bouten.

and then Rosa Chinesis En Bouten Petite Souer.

*sucks at explaining* =\

@_@ Too much french.

I'll give the 2nd chapter a try. Anyway, if I was able to actually enjoy Kimi Nozo and Ai Yori Aoshi (I ADORE THIS ONE)... :D I think I can like Maria-sama ga miteru, too :)

I hated Kimi ga Nozo... It was the biggest piece of shit I've EVER seen.

Ai Yori Aoshi isn't particularly to my liking either, but for fans of the genre, it does what it's supposed to, pretty well.

Marimite is really, really girly, so just a warning - it's nothing like Aya or Kimiga

If it's as girly as Candy, then... yeah, I'll be able to watch it.

And sorry for asking, but... why do you hate Kimi Nozo? O.o Only hateable thing from that show (IMO) is stupid-ass Takayuki.

I thought the characters in KGNE, in particularly Mitsuki, was HORRIBLY underdeveloped and instead of actually developing her more, they just took what little they had and continued to run with it. I know I'm *supposed* to be feeling all these different emotions towards her (like pity), but the thing is, I couldn't bring myself to care for her. It's not out of hate of what she did or anything that I dislike her.. It's just that her pretentious and annoying character was WAY too artificial for me. It's like "If Character A did this. Mitsuki would..." She was an incredibly boring character that tried to come off as serious, and each time I looked at her, I just felt pity towards her. Not "Aw, poor Mitsuki" pity, but "What the hell?"

The storyline in KGNE had spewing amounts of potential to be a real tear-jerker, but anime like KGNE are very character driven, and in that area, they failed to deliver with their boring and pretentious execution of the characters. Everything in KGNE pointed to one character and one ending, taking away any real sense of expectations or anticipation. Each time I saw something happened, I kept on asking "Why the hell am I watching this when I could be watching a GOOD soap instead?"

And I won't get into Takayuki, who, if I called "one dimensional" would actually insult the word, because in order to be one dimensional, would mean he had a personality to begin with. Which he didn't. Takayuki being the main character, is one of the problems in this craptastic anime.

KGNE is SO overrated that it actually irritates me each time I check the top 200 Animenfo series and find it located at number 2. No surprise there though, seeing as how the bitch moderators there delete EVERY bad review of the series, no matter how objective the review was written.

End of rant. =p
