NEW from Newtype Magazine is the report that they are making a Chrno Crusade anime.
If you recall, the main character of Chrno Crusade is the inspiration for Bridget's design except this character is actually female.

So... what's the general HerV consensus regarding Final Fantasy: Unlimited? I saw the first episode yesterday, courtesy of the latest issue of Newtype, and I wasn't quite sure what to think.
On one hand, the animation is absolutely gorgeous, the character design is equally great (Kaze is the badass Gene Starwind should have been), and there are plenty of little FF mainstays scattered throughout the show for fans to giggle/drool at. Every time Kaze blows away a monster, they play the classic "victory" music. :supergrin
On the other hand, there are two things that kept me from enjoying the show as much as I really could have. The biggest gripe I had is that the direction was terrible. The characters just randomly moved from one scene to another, with no buildup or time for anyone to absorb the previous or current scenes. It was all "Hey, here's a train, let's get on it. Hey, now we're in some weird new world. Hey, now a monster's trying to kill us. Hey...". Nobody really stopped to think about what was going on. The other thing that bugged me is the monster design. None of the classic FF monsters aside from Chocobos showed up in the first episode (unless you count the summons Bahamut and Phoenix), which seems like a bit of a bad sign to me. What's the point of making a FF anime if you're just going to have the characters fight big eyeball monsters?
I watched the second episode fansubbed today, and the pacing and overall flow of the story seemed much improved... but I'm still waiting for some FF monsters to show up. The main bad guys look cool though. In any case, I'd still like to hear other people's opinions on the show, because if it were a truly an awesome anime I don't think it would've gotten cut from 52 to 25 episodes. I don't want to start collecting FF:U if the quality suddenly takes a nosedive halfway through the series or anything.

I just watched the pilot/first episode of Full Metal Alchemist, and it kicks ass. I've been downloading lots of first episodes of random anime lately (thank you www.animesuki.com), and this was the only one that actually seemed like something of quality. It did have a Trigun-ish vibe, but that's probably only superficial.

Breaking news:
Cheaper Basket (04:59 PM EST): According to AnimeNation and confirmed from FUNimation, the Fruits Basket series is being repriced from $39.99 per volume to $29.99 per volume as of 10/15/2003. This makes an already fantastically cheap and affordable four disc series all the more affordable. Do not walk, do not run - fly out and get it when the new price hits and enjoy one of the really big sleepers of the past year.

I watched the first half of it (13 of the 26, was supposed to be 52, but cut due to shitty ratings).
Apparently episode 26 (finale) has what has been described to me as a "delightful tentacle scene."
As an anime, its mearly average. It gets a few points for having Final Fantasy in the title, but then you realise that it has just a little more to do with Final Fantasy than The Spirits Within. Like summons and chocobos. Worth downloading, not worth buying.

Tenjo Tenge is another "school-brawling extravaganza" in the spirit of Ikkitousen, although generally it's a lot more explicit (the guy who draws it usually draws porn). The art is awesome, and the plot is surprisingly good as well--much darker than Ikkitousen, on the whole.
And in my mind, Ikkitousen, Airmaster, Tenjo Tenge and the rest in this subgenre all coexist beautifully. :trannie Airmaster does some things better than Ikkitousen; Ikkitousen does some things better than Air Master; both kick ass. Yay :yay
Although I will fully admit that Sakiyama Kaori makes Airmaster abovegod.

ernnn... Just read through the first volume of Tenjou Tenge, and I'm getting the same vibe as Ikkitousen - big boobs (that you can see!) and even the odd sex scene.
So sex+fighting = awesome right?
I'm not so sure. I know ppl DO like Ikkitousen, but I personally rather dislike it - and it's the same sort of thing with Tenjou Tenge.
I think it's the whole organized schoolyard brawling thing - it just seems so insular. There's an implied premise that everybody awesome is at one of these schools. oh and do any of these ppl actually GO to school- where are the blardy teachers!
oh and the fact that all of these characters are so formulaic and quite frankly I don't 'bond' with them at all. They're all just random thugs that wear a uniform - especially the hero of Tenjou Tenge - he's this arrogant pr1ck who you know will eventually come up trumps because of some hidden pow@h of destinay! he pulls outta his @ss!
I reckon one of the core elements of a good fighting story is a likable hero/heroine who you don't mind winning all the time. DBZ has this, Hajime no ippou has this and yeah... Airmaster - definitely.
Frankly, everyone in Airmaster is pretty NOT pretty - but Maki just makes up for it coz she's so damn cool-frankly i want maki to win - in contrast, whatshername from Ikkitousen, I couldn't care less if she got beaten up and stuck in a Hellabunna Doujin - actually I'd PREFER it that way.

Although it's always an annoying thing to hear, the first volume of TT doesn't really do justice to the rest. It sets up some things, it introduces the heroes, but things don't really start picking up until around the second, when they actually start getting more into the story.
Of course, if you don't actually like the characters, probably not worth it to stick with it. I do enjoy them, personally, and I know that tends to make all the difference.
One thing, though--although the hero does have "lol hero power lol," it's not the sweet deal it tends to be in other series; actually, as it stands, it's really done more to fuck him up than it's done to help him. Yeah, we all know that eventually it'll be his ace in the hole, but it's interesting to see a series that actually makes him work for it.
Also--Madhouse got TT anime license? Aces :supergrin

I just watched the first episode of PLANETES (www.animesuki.com , thank you bittorrent). Pretty good. I couldn't compare it to anything really. That's AVENGER, and it's shit. Well, not really but close. Despite there being some nice action scenes, it bored me. Characters didn't do anything for me. I also hate little cute robot boys and girls, and the episode was loaded with them. It seems to be a main theme in the series. I'm not going to watch more of it.

Some thoughts on some shows that are being fansubbed. Your mileage may vary.
Ikkitousen. The fight scenes suck, the story sucks, the animation sucks, you can tell who the important characters are because they're the only ones that don't have character designs that suck... the only reason to watch this show is for the fan service and to see which deadly bastard from Romance of the Three Kingdoms shows up as a high school girl next.
Well, that's the only reason I'm watching...
Onegai Twins. Well, they took away the main draw from the original series, the alien cradle robber teacher (well, she still shows up, but she and her boytoy aren't the main focus anymore) and they replaced her with two high school girls, one of which was designed purely for lolita fantasy content. Aside from that, the show is not that bad. I actually find it a better watch and more amusing than the original series, but that's just me. The running joke about the sidekick from OT stalking his lolita girlfriend was funny at first but it's slowly getting increasingly more disturbing. And I don't like this whole incest (implied or not) angle that's oozing out of way too many shows out of Japan right now. A sad statement then, that this is one of the few shows I sit waiting for the next episode on... having watched Onegai Teacher is not strictly necessary although you might wonder who certain characters are, or what the hell the little floating gremlin thing is.
Full Metal Panic Fumoffu. Again, having watched the original series, Full Metal Panic, helps so you know who some of the characters are, but since so far Fumoffu is totally unrelated to the events of the original series, it's not that serious. I haven't even watched all of the original series - I only got halfway through. Watching a few episodes does help to sort of set up the situation though. Anyway, I enjoy it more than the original series, but I know people who watched the original series who don't like this one as much because it's more like the manga (i.e., more comedy) and there isn't any mecha action like in the original. I can recommend it if you want some cheap laughs. The only other show I actually look forward to new episodes for. Pathetic, no?
Gear Fighter Dendoh. Not a new series, but a couple of groups have only recently started doing it. I'll be honest, I only picked this up because of Dendoh's appearence in Super Robot War R. It's a TV show for kids, so you know what to expect: schizophrenic art and animation quality. You get really awesome looking episodes, really crap episodes, and vaguely okay episodes. The first episode was much better than what I was expecting but some of the ones after were much worse. Oh well. I have it up to episode 5 but I haven't watched them all; I'd like to say that whether I pick up the rest depends on what I think after watching them, but to be honest, I'll probably pick up all of them because... dammit, he's got gears on his ARMS and LEGS, man. And he kicks ass with them. Also, he was funky to use in SRWR.
Kousetsu Hyaku Monogatari. It's caught my eye because it's one of the few new shows coming out that's NOT based on a dating sim or hentai game. It's about a storyteller wandering ancient Japan, writing a collection of ghost stories and following a mysterious trio of tricksters with a supernatural twist to them. The show is... interesting. It's not an action show, more sort of a psychological thriller. The animation is actually a bit old school, but they really slap on the effects, like a university film major playing with Adobe Aftereffects for the the first time. At no time was I surprised by the story, which were fairly predictable. Still, the show has an interesting premise, and again, the biggest thing going for it is that it shows no signs of being a show where they're going to introduce a new girl each episode and throw her at the main character (but I've been wrong before). Some of the character designs are pretty odd, but there's that old school again. And besides, if I can suspend my disbelief and accept a catgirl maid, I can accept a dwarf with a giant eyeball on his chest. If you're sick of all the girl-get game adaptations, or like period pieces set in Japan and don't mind giving the samurai and ninja a rest (well, none have appeared so far, but that's no guarantee they won't pop up eventually), give it a spin and see what you think.
True Lunar Chronicle Tsukihime. *watches prologue*
You'd think I'd feel more guilt about getting wood over the idea of seeing more of this after what I just said about girl-get games, wouldn't you? Oh well.
Naruto. To be brutally honest, the anime series is crap. Any honest Naruto fan who read the manga can admit this. Aside from a few scattered episodes, the series bites. The random quality of the episodes, the filler episodes, the dragging-on-forever-to-fill-out-an-entire-episode-with-one-chapter-from-the-manga-trick, it just goes on and on. When I hear people going on about how awesome and cool the show is, I want to bitchslap them. Seriously. I certainly think you're wrong here. A comic has it's limits. The story of Naruto is meant to be told in an audiovisual manner; high speed fights, lots of movement, MUSIC, voices, these things set it appart from the comic, and improve it in my opinion. Yes some episodes are not as good as others (animation, slow story), but I can live with that since that happens in roughly 90% of every televison anime ever.
An episode is allmost always 2 manga chapters, and sometimes 1,5. Even if it's 1,5 it almost always adds something to the manga. I'm a manga reader, and can't say anything bad about the anime.

999 TV series follows a certain distinct pattern:
Tetsuro goes to planet (for the first episode just substitute this with Tetsuro is on Earth) -> Tetsuro meets person -> tragedy ensues -> Tetsuro goes elsewhere.
Seriously. The movie is the same way, except with a resolution (didn't get to see the rest of the TV series, was it ever subbed?). I love them both but if you're not up for some sadness, you probably won't enjoy 999.

I like anime love hina coz it doesn't flog the dead horse as much as the manga does. Oh and at least it tries to have a binding theme for the series - "dreams vs. reality yadda yadda yadda" - that's pretty well resolved by 26. Manga Love Hina has no themes... it's just a boobfest. I also prefer the character style of anime LH.

Whenever I hear anyone say that the "manga moves so much faster than the anime" in regards to Naruto, I always get the feeling that it's because they've read the manga in giant chunks at a time. If they were to have read it from the start with only one chapter being released every week, it would make for a far different view. Sure, the anime tends to add filler, but often times that filler helps the show. The Ten Ten vs Temari fight, SHOWING that Ebisu is skilled, those flashbacks of Hinata's in the Naruto/Kiba fight, they're all there to yes, cut costs, but at least they do it well.

Um. Are you living in some kind of alternate reality or something?
If the manga doesn't have a story, the anime has even LESS of a story. I seriously don't understand how you could argue otherwise. Both versions had the same basic plot, and the anime was entirely adapted from the stories in the manga... but it didn't even manage to cover all of them. So claiming that the manga has no story is a bit ridiculous, because it technically has more than the anime does, regardless of whether or not you think it's not as entertaining as the animated stuff.
And I felt the "dreams vs. reality" theme was entirely forced and irrelevant, personally... if anything, it only served to underscore how much of a loser Keitaro is, which is one of things that makes the series (manga OR anime) so god-awful -- you can't believe anyone would actually fall in love with such a freaking moron. Kentaro should've beat his ass and run away with Naru for several nights of sweaty, passionate doujin-making. :trannie
As for the "boobfest" thing - BOTH VERSIONS ARE BOOBFESTS. I'm sorry, but anyone who takes this series as anything more than super-softcore comedy hentai needs to have their head checked. The "romance" is forced, cliched, and various other adjectives; and 25% or more of the "comedy" is LOL BOOBS!!1. It's Akamatsu's knack for character design and coming up with unique story ideas that end up saving Love Hina from being a complete waste of time.
NB. LHAgain and the Spring Special are travesties and I don't consider them part of the 26 ep + christmas special that I love so dearly.
Another reason why the manga is superior - it handled the Again storyline much better than the OVA's did. The animated version pretty much revloved around Kanako's sudden appearance and the "love shack" (lol) on the grounds of the Hinata Inn, whereas the manga actually took a little time to develop Kanako before bringing Keitaro back. And the subsequent events weren't just limited to one night at a haunted building, either.
I can't comment on the Spring Special, because it looked so awful I decided not to watch it. :x

McGuirk and Underkill are in the right. After seeing how much they altered the lovely story for LHA, I said to myself. Thank God they stopped there.
LHA is based on vols 11-13, and in 13, the stuff with the "magic love house" was originally Naru running away from everyone, travelling as far north as she could before she finally had to... well, I won't spoil, but it's the same scene near the end of LHA.
And they brought in Naru's sister and that rich dude. Why?

I have to disagree. I admit that something is added to the experience by what you've mentioned - Naruto does indeed have a good soundtrack and pretty much all the voices so far have been good choices - but I find the overall quality of the series pretty mediocre and uninspired. There are some shining jewels where they do interesting interpretations of events in the manga or they make changes that are for the good (they made the Shikamaru fight a lot less lame than the manga version by giving the Sound Nin - well, powers), but for every episode that makes me say, "Whoa! That was a good episode!", there are seven that make me say, "Ugh. Glad that's over." Maybe my standards are set too high; after all, it is tv anime, the dumping ground for weak budgets...
Actually, I picked it up when Toriyama's World started working on it and was releasing it one chapter or so at a time, so that argument doesn't really hold water, but that is an interesting point. I admit that part of why it may move faster has less to do with the manga's writing itself and more with how you can quickly scan two pages of explanation whereas with the anime you have to listen to a 5-10 minute monologue about what a character is doing... you can control the pace yourself, in essence. But when I say episodes plod, I mean less in the "why haven't they gotten to this point in the series yet???" sense, and more in the "Sweet baby Jesus, why the hell isn't this episode over yet???" sense. I always have this nagging feeling that everyone's dragging their heels to stretch out the events of the episode, which for the most part is true because they are, for the same reason they make the filler episodes - so they don't run out of manga to adapt. I understand WHY they do it... but that doesn't change the fact that it takes something out of the series.
As for the Ten Ten vs Temari fight, in some ways I thought the manga version was more interesting and dramatic in showing how powerful the Sand Nins were, but I agree that if a filler episode is necessary, that's the way to do it.
As for Love Hina, I actually felt that the manga and the anime had strengths of their own. I preferred the art in the manga and thought it was much more amusing, but that the anime did a better job with the story and explaining away the inexplicable goings on in the series. I also think that Love Hina Again did a pretty good job of rendering the events of a couple of volumes down into three episodes and capping the series, even if I did hate the fact that they cut out some of my favourite bits. And the manga really did flail around without a head for a while there before it ended - Dragonball Z syndrome.

There's plenty of story after volume 10. Hell, the LHA storyline begins in volume 11. And post-10 is when Keitaro and Naru's relationship really begins to take off, as well.
... You should've stopped at "whatever". :D

I'd love to tell you case by case but I honestly can't remember specific instances. I haven't read the manga in somewhere around a year and haven't watched the anime in longer than that. My brain has finite resources so unused information is constantly being overwritten by new useless bits of info. I can only remember that was my impression after seeing them both. In general, though, I can say that I thought the anime did a better job of conveying emotion and the tribulations of Keitaro and Narusegawa's relationship than the manga did, it seemed (somewhat) more serious. Of course, this might just be because the anime didn't go on about 5 or 6 volumes longer than it needed to and turn Narusegawa into an even more hysterical psychotic freak than she already was as an excuse to keep her and Keitaro apart, or have as many blatant fanboy references. It's hard to say. As for the inexplicable part... again, I can't really put out specifics, but all sorts of little things in Love Hina, like the hidden passages in Hinatasou or the enchanted honeymoon cottage... little things that Akamatsu makes no attempt to actually explain... at least in the anime they make an excuse for that sort of strangeness... well, okay, so the fact that it's a place where reality and dreams meet isn't exactly the most solid of excuses... but it's more than they give in the manga... *cough*

Hey, don't get me wrong I'm not bashing Love Hina - I just don't particularly like the last 4-5 volumes of the manga. Everyone knows my love for Love Hina and body size Naru pillows is unlimited!
But yeah - I think Naru and Keitaro relationship develop when they're studying for Toudai - the post 10 stuff is just a 'formalization' and I don't think adds that much. The whole Kanako thing IS a bit too out there for me. - Anime ended without the resolution of Toudai (forget spring special!), but a better adjusted Keitaro - which is enough for me.
Still post 10 does stuff for some I'm sure, just not moi.

Oh, and for Love Hina fans who don't already know, Del Rey has the rights for the english translation of Mahou Sensei Negima, Ken Akamatsu's new series.
If you don't know anything about it, imagine Harry Potter but instead of a student at a wizard's academy he's a 10 year old English teacher at an all girl's school in Japan. Lots of cheap laughs and fanservice, and 30 girls in his class. Of course, the girl who gets the most time in the scenes is the Narusegawa clone, who he gets to play Keitaro to... although she doesn't give him the Narupunchiii as much presumably because it would be a miserable reflection on society to show a 14 year old girl constantly pounding the shit out of a 10 year old. The constant lolicon parade (well, they're Akamatsu girls, so there's a wide variety of... builds) is balanced out by shota as the main character's students occasionally molest him. Good clean fun for all.
Looking forward to Del Rey's advertising campaign for this one.

So your issue with Love Hina, particularly the manga, is that it isn't realistic and that the plot doesn't make sense.
Well...yes... but I really don't get what you say when you say that there was no plot. I BOUGHT the manga and as I read each volume and closed the book, the reason I kept at it and bought the entire series was that it felt like there was PROGRESS. It might be strange, but I felt that in the end, with each volume, the characters developed, that they've changed if however subtle, and the plot is inextricably tied to the characters.
Maybe reading it in book format made a difference as to how I see the series.
Though it is funny how you say the anime is better but compare Love Hina anime to the Love Hina manga as a whole, but decide not to include LHA and the Spring Special because you think they suck and it would hurt your point of the anime > the manga.
Also, anyone notice how much of a video game fan Akamatsu is, especially when making Mutsumi's outfit. During Halloween, Mutsumi was dressed as Lei Lei/Hsien-Ko, and in volume 14 her outfit bears a striking resemblance to Aeris's.

coolmandool: Yeah, I know you weren't bashing LH, I was just saying I'm not accustomed to rationalizing any flaws either version of the series might have, or even admitting to liking it. :trannie
My main problem with LH as a whole is that I've always agreed with that infamous IGN review of the anime... the series is prety much tailored to appeal to "teenage boys' immature sexual fantasies"... and that's something I have a hard time standing behind if it's not blatant pornography.
I watched the entire anime through once, and then decided I probably wouldn't have the urge to do so ever again. And I was right. But I actually like the manga a lot, Keitaro and boob jokes aside, because of the art style, the unique stories, and Akamatsu's awesome character designs.
Also, Kanako > *.

Yeah, I thought that was really neat too. There's a bit of concept artwork for Keitaro's battle outfit in volume thirteen, and next to him there's a little designer note saying his overalls should look "like Alex's from Street Fighter 3". I had a little geek orgasm when I saw that. :supergrin

Okay, so I saw Gunslinger Girl the other day... and it was actually kind of decent. The series is about this organization based in Italy that takes wounded/traumatized young girls from hospitals and trains them to become assassins. Every girl has a handler of sorts who works with them on missions, and so all the organization's work is handled by these pairs of a girl and a Mysterious Guy In Suit. Interesting concept.
The animation is decent enough, and the music's good.... the only real flaw I can find with the show is that they went a little too young with the girls' ages. Henrietta, the girl in the first ep, looks like she's barely all of 10, which makes the show's already slightly unbelievable premise sort of borderline ridiculous. I'm going to keep watching though, this stuff is kind of interesting. It's like Noir, but not.

Well I guess it's possible, but it's only up to about chapter 30 right now in Japan and I've read up to chapter 28 translated and nothing like that's happened so far... they're currently on a school trip to Kyoto though... I suppose in the two chapters I haven't read they might've gotten sidetracked... mind you, Kyoto's not really anywhere near the Hinata Inn... I mean, I don't know where exactly the Inn is, but there was that little adventure the LH cast had off in Kyoto after Narusegawa and Keitaro both failed the Toudai entrance the first time around... they took the train out and there was the implication Kyoto was a place far off from home and where they were unlikely to run into anyone they knew, so considering the implied distance (again, only my interpretation, it's not like I'm looking at a map of Japan that marks the locations of Hinata Inn and Kyoto, it might not really be THAT far... Narusegawa & Keitaro might just have been being lazy bums or something) Hinatasou doesn't really seem like the sort of place you'd just 'drop in' on from Kyoto.
Then again, since the current story arc is dealing with the girl connected to the Shinmeiryu, there is a much better chance that they would've ended up at the Inn for some reason, even if the current point in the story I've read up to doesn't suggest any such thing... it's hard to say.

Naru showed up in another Akamatsu series, Earth Defender Mao-chan. She wasn't all that old (definitely several years past her age in the series, but not "old lady" material), and I don't think Keitaro was supposed to be dead, he just happened to not be around when the characters visited the Inn.

That is what makes Airmaster awesomely awesome - it's not just Maki - it's the whole 'supporting' cast - though they're not supporting like DBZ. I mean in DBZ after a villain becomes good, they can't win to save themselves - Piccolo, Vegeta. In Airmaster, the supporting cast get better - and kick the sh1t outta new challengers as much as Maki does. I mean just because Airmaster beats Kai - it really isn't all that conclusive. In DBZ- by the time Goku goes SSJ 10- Piccolo might as well go home and take a nap.

Ohhh. I forgot. Azuma Kiyohiko of Azumanga Daioh fame is working on his new thing, Yotsubato!, which started just this March. The main character's a little girl, Yotsuba, who's basically a terrifying mutant fusion of Osaka, Tomo and Chiyo-chan. With green hair.
Yotsubato! is done in the more traditional manga format, not the 4 panel strip style from Azumanga Daioh, but it's still a comedy series. No word on if an animated version is in the works yet(presumably when they've got more material to work with). Fan translators are working very slowly on the series; the furthest progress I've seen is chapter three.

it's like Azumanga Daioh BUT FOR BLOKES!
I'd say it's more like Sexy Commando Gaiden - Sugoiyo! Masaru-san. Both shows revolve around hilarious amounts of extreme randomness taking place in high school.

I picked up Azumanga Daioh the manga today translated into English.
It keeps the relative spirit of Azumanga intact, though obviously they had to change a lot with the translation. For example, they made Yukari into a Spanish teacher, and Osaka dialect is Italian New York slang.
Nandeyane = Fuggedaboutit
Basu Gasu Bakuhatsu = Rubber Baby Buggy Bumper
Things like that.
Overall, I'm still entertained by it.

I didn't really like the change to Spanish teacher for Yukari (I'm not convinced it will really help with some of the jokes), and I can't help but think that it could have really benefitted from some footnotes, but I can appreciate that they're trying to do a translation that doesn't involve lots of little explanations. I still like it too, but I think the fan community did a better job overall. I can't help but wonder what sort of job Viz would have done on it.

Well Tokyopop has done stuff like this to make the properties more "accessible" to the US population. On one side are the anime purist fags who are probably boycotting this release (and the hardcore ones won't even buy anything Tokyopop), and on the other side are people that just wanna see it come out here.
I don't care. I got my 300+ page Trigun 1 today (and a bunch of GIJoe comics; they didn't have Street Fighter) so nuts to Ikkitousen Boobie Vixens.

It's cool among otaku to hate Tokyopop because they OMG BUTCHERED INITIAL D!, but lately they've been really good about keeping plot, names, and cultural references intact. In fact, GTO is full of footnotes explaing Japanese pop culture stuff to the point of annoyance. The only thing I read that isn't published by Tokyopop is One Piece, and Viz (who is supposedly SOOOOOO GOOD! when compared to TP in otaku circles) is taking for fucking ever to get it out. Vol 1 came out in July, Vol 2 won't be out until November. Nevermind the fact that a ton of it has already appeared in Shonen Jump.

I'm only picking up two of Tokyopop's books right now, FLCL and Kare Kano. The translation for both is pretty decent, in fact I was pleasantly surprised for the most part with Kare Kano - right up till about Volume 5, when they made a couple of pretty brain dead translating errors. Considering they'd done so well up till that point, it came as bit of a surprise, actually. I don't know if that's par for the course with them or anything.

She's frantic, she's frustrated and she's female. Hiroe's determined to get rid of her three 'F's' in the wildest sex comedy ever animated. No helping hands are refused, even when they belong to the local mad scientist and his unbelievable inventions! The bare facts of one young woman's quest to find a solution for a problem she can't even discuss in polite company. Includes bonus video production portfolio. Explicit sex. ADULTS ONLY.

I just got this too... I had to wait until the comic shop got so I could get my 20% discount. :s2hy: Funny, funny stuff. Everyone in this thing is funny, though I have a soft spot for Miss Yukari ("I'm just PRETENDING to be their friend. ^_^") and Tomo (Young Excel? XD).
I liked how they translated the stuff in SDS' second paragraph. That stuff's always tricky to do. But if you're going for funny, nothing beats a young girl saying "Yo, how YOU doin'?" Hopefully this will carry over to ADV's version of the anime, too.

Eh, hardly ever do I find typical "Japanese-specific" jokes funny. Trying to come up with an English equivalent for them usually fucks up the joke. I would have had a hard time trying to find the funny in the "Fuggedaboutit" strip if I hadn't known the original version. It just... didn't make any sense.
Keeping the original joke and explaining it through footnotes usually ruins it as well. It's like when somebody tells you a joke, you don't get it, and they have to explain it to you. Afterwards you'll know why it was supposed to be funny, but you won't laugh because the moment is gone.
And if they just leave strips with these jokes out altogether I'll feel like I don't have a complete version of the comic.
I still love the series though.
Also, Italian New Yorker Osaka > Southern Valleygirl Osaka.

Also, Italian New Yorker Osaka > Southern Valleygirl Osaka. That's for sure. I got tired of the southern accent they gave Kitsune in Love Hina (she was Osakan, right? correct me plz). But they gave the "voiceless" guy in Excel Saga a thick Scottish (was it?) progue for his Osaka (?) accent, and that was also very funny.
Overall, I'd say the Brooklyn thing works best, though, since it has the "slighty different, but funnier" quality. The Scottish (Irish?) thing, I have to read it slowly and sound it out at times to figure out what that gu-- Sumiyoshi!! -- is saying.
SDShamshel
30th October 2003, 08:24 PM
Yeah, upon further thinking regarding Osaka's brooklyn accent, I realized it made more sense than a southern one. With a southern accent, it will always give the impression of a southern belle, especially with the way Osaka is. Part of the fun of Osaka is that kansai dialect is usually portrayed as loud and brash (see: Kitsune, Kero), and it doesn't really match Osaka normally. Same goes with a Brooklyn accent.

Generally bad dubs and bad translation, take forever to release stuff, haven't updated their website in about two years (other than changing the logo so it now says Geneon). Their CD publishing branch seems to be doing an okay job, so they aren't really paying enough attention to their DVD publishing.
I've seen half of Gad Guard, and now I'm going to have to wait another year to see the rest of it. This would be okay if I had faith that its publisher would do a good job and release it in a timely manner, but signs point to no.

Still, not really great or anything. Slapstick comedy was lame as hell, most characters were stereotypes, the music was ok and the story has been done better before. But hey, who knows what happens further on. My experience tells me, however, that first episodes are usually superior to most of the following episodes because their main purpose is to draw people in, wow them or/and make them interested in the story and characters. And to me, Chrno Crusade failed in all of these things.

Something tells me that you don't watch much anime then, even though you do.
But really, more often than not, anime falls short in the first few episodes. Usually, I think it's because it has to lay out the basic premise of a show and most anime premises are terrible.
My review of Chrno Crusade episode 1:
I enjoyed it, simple as that. It kept my attention from the get-go, and had enough spunk and excellent animation to keep me watching. I liked the panties joke because Rosette wears the long underwear kind of "panties."

Well, it's of no matter, everyone should be watching Read or Die TV anyway. That's the only one of the more recent shows I've been able to get any of, but I'm quite blown away by it. I was a little worried that with new lead characters it might be missing some of what I loved about the OAVs, but these fears were groundless. http://highervoltage.net/mb/images/icons/icon6.gif The Paper Sisters are one of those "so cool I can't choose a favorite" groups--Michelle is hilariously dumb but surprisingly effective under the right circumstances, Maggie is like a big kickass half-British half-Chinese Sakaki, and Anita has the distinction of being a "bratty little girl" character who doesn't fall into the second dimension--if I was forced to choose a fave, it'd probably be her. They're quite good, but some weird stuff happens in them (Genjuro gets killed after the first 2 minutes or so). However, whether or not Shiki is hawt really has no relevance, since the quality of the only web-released copy of these OVAs is so laughably bad that you'd be jerking off to a blurry dark humanoid shape that is apparently Shiki judging from the subtitles.

I kind of like Chrno Crusader. The first episode wasn't anything spectacular (but, then again, how many first episodes are?), but I have a good hunch that it'll pick up after a bit of time. I really hope this exceeds just 13 episodes.. Rosette, in that non-revealing nun outfit is somehow extremely hot...
Aah... I'm soo bad, thinking such thoughts about a holy nun!

I haven't even bothered to watch any of the Azumanga Daioh episodes yet and I had the whole series for about 3 weeks now. And I don't know why, but I'm really hating myself for procrastinating everytime I buy/download a new OVA set. My NGE DVD set is still placed inside my china cabinet collecting dust....
And pardon my ignorance, but would the artists who drew t.A.T.u PARAGATE and FLCL happen to be the same person?

"The Russian pop girls t.A.T.u have their own anime movie coming out in November 2004 in Japan and will run for 100 minutes. It will be directed by Kashima Norio (Crusher Joe, Dirty Pair) and Susume Kudoh (Sakura Wars, Silent Mobius). The opening animation will be directed by Cowboy Bebop's creator Shinchiro Watanabe."

You know, once upon a time I owned all the Hellsing DVDs. I bought them separately and everything.
Then the first and the last of them broke in weird freak accidents. >:|
I thought about rebuying them, but just got the bootlegs from some anime site. The boots turned out to be just R1 DVD rips, so it was all cool. Especially at around 25-30 bucks.
But... fuck, the local FYE here sells Hellsing for thirty bucks a pop :/ can't afford that.
Also, Hellsing manga volume 1 is out. Go get that shit, it's fourteen bucks.

I wanted to, but see, I'm an unfortunate victim of irony everywhere I go. You'd think a place called Newbury Comics would live up to it's namesake, instead of selling 2 racks of mostly Marvel graphic novels and an entire floor and a half of overpriced music and shitty clothes.

I'm very impressed with Planetes. I still can't really explain why it has an effect on me, because judging from the concept (space garbage men, no real story), you'd think it would suck. But it works, somehow. Every episode offers something new, the characters are interesting (some more then others), the music is good, the animation is good. There's a nice romantic theme going on (both in the love sence as in the trying-to-find-a-feeling-that-you-know-is-unfindable-but-you-try-it-anyway sence), and the whole atmosphere feels right.
If anyone else is watching it, what do you think? It doesn't seem to be as popular as Naruto or Fullmetal Alchemist so I don't expect many to watch it, but still. Opinions plz.

I've been busying myself with Fullmetal Alchemist lately, and I'm super-duper eager to start watching Dead Leaves when it finally airs this January. I hadn't heard of this one since the "FLCL 2?" disaster thread, and I only found out about it again since I saw an interview with the director for it on TV in my hotel here in Japan.
After seeing it close up, I can't help but notice that it's got the FLCL-like exaggeration in movement and action sequences (TV-boy shooting slowly with a pistol, but tons of coppers getting shot by hundreds of bullets), but has a very strong quality of Jet Grind Radio mixed with Viewtiful Joe, topped off by liberal amounts of crack cocaine.
I can't wait.

I saw Fatal Fury: TMP a while ago, it was decent. The drawings were crap sometimes, other times they were great. And the middle of the film was boring as boring can be, and the fight scenes were nothing special either. It was like watching Final Fantasy characters fighting, where's the combos and the rest of the good stuff? I think special moves should've been rare. Overall in my opinion it gets a 2.5/10 from me. And I really, really, really hate characters like Sulia. Maybe Terry starts to care for her character but the viewer just wants to strangle her.

Wait, you're comparing the level of fanservice in Chrno Crusade to NAJICA? Chrno Crusade's only had one episode so far with any real fanservice (two panty shots, the ass wiggle), and pokes fun at fanservice in the others (People looking at Rosette's "panties" which are just like long underwear or something).
This is opposed to Najica, where the first episode involves a main character in a mini-skirt fighting a group of bodyguard french maids in order to rescue a girl from a lesbian pedophile.

My Nadesico DVD Box Set arrived today.
Of course, this isn't a new anime, so I don't have to say a lot about it, except that I've been looking forward to getting this for a very long time. Nadesico's one of "those" series of mine, the kind that you consider worth having above all else, even if you realize the show's not that good.
Cardcaptor Sakura is another one, but the dvd's are too many and thus too expensive.
coolmandool
22nd December 2003, 10:06 PM
Does it come with the 'Prince of Darkness' movie?
Yeah, I dunno bout Nadesico - it's definitely one of the better robo type series - love the way it mixes real and super robots - and it's cool that it has a firm appreciation of its robo heritage - but it doesn't really have any lasting impact for me.
I mean, when you first watch anything it always seems awesome, but it's the long run that separates gold from average stuff and crap.
Currently I'm watching Naruto (watched all 63 current episodes in the space of 2 days!) and I CAN'T BELIEVE I didn't get onto this earlier. I'd like to think Naruto's a keeper (and I'm pretty sure it will be), but who knows what'll happen in a month or so.
Stuff like Gundam (pretty much all of them), FMP, DNA, Noir etc... that get flaunted as end of the world awesome by anime types do it for me initially, but then you realize you're riding the hype rather than actually enjoying it.
Just ranting about nothing really, but in all honesty, I could probably count the amount of genuinely good anime series I';ve seen on one hand.
(NB. the other hand's for Love Hina)

Maggie has a look I really like, that of pure androgyny.
She's not a guy who likes a girl (Bridget).
She's not a girl who looks like a guy (Project A-kO character of some sort)
She's not a girl who dresses like a guy but looks like a girl regardless (most anime crossdressers).
Just...neutral.
Also, I love girls in suits and tuxedos.

It's been a good year since MAcross Zero started, but I've just dlded the 3 available episodes and it's pretty cool...- It IS a war/mecha/real robot anime , but it's relatively light on the angsty introspection over the horrors of war blah blah... (primarily due to the fact that the series consists only of 5 OVA's - so there isn't the time for it) - the result is a much more entertaining subtly moving real robot series.
Oh did I mention that the 3D animation mecha battles ROCK ON LEVELS UNKNOWN up to this point in time. The Gundam Evolution 3D sequences look like amateur works compared to this. Amazingly cool- While I've always thought the actual mecha designs for macross were a little gangly - I've also thought that the actual fight scenes in Macross were more intense than any other real robot series. - this takes your expectations and blows them away... really good stuff.

So I've just watched 'Gunbuster' (lol) and really enjoyed it, and so I feel the time has come for me to take a step into a genre I've always strived to avoid: giant robot anime.
Any recommendations or warnings would be appreciated. As a guide, I loved the sense of scale in GB ("six billion enemies!", captions that say "12,000 years later") - so that's good, and I also liked the ultra-hysterical battles and the screaming of move names that accompanied them.
Oh yes, and the boobies were great, too.
Anything that combines those features in any manner would be most interesting to hear about. Thank you for your time.
P.S. And yes I know I've watched EVANGELION. That doesn't count.
