Well, finished off watching "Gatekeepers 21". All 6 episodes of it (No, not the crappy Chinese Bootlegs. The real ones.). And it seemed darker than the original "Gatekeepers" series, like how the Invaders are actually people now. Still not sure why Reiji, that dark Gatekeeper from the original, is now fighting the invaders.

R.O.D. looks great from what I've read of it. Also, all 3 eps are on one DVD so it's not like there's a huge commitment involved in wanting to see the whole thing.
I have it, and it is indeed a great little series. Top-notch in every department.
It had one of those melancholy endings that so irritate me, though. Why can't one of my favorite series have a happy ending for once? ;_;

Just finished watching Gundam SEED 39. SEED's gearing up for its final run through with only 13 episodes left. I feel that SEED has finally become a unique series that isn't marred by all the "SEED is a combination of other series" aspect it had earlier on. I especially like how it doesn't try to shove ideas down our throats. The philosophies of the characters are presented as just that, and they add to the characters.
Unfortunately though, being too different is apparently not going over well with the hardcore Gundam fans in Japan who complained that the theme of friendship strayed from Gundam's roots. So now, they're making a new series for 2005 that will go back to its roots (moreso, considering SEED was supposed to be like MSG for the new generation). Fags.

Okay, so my roommate bought all the R.Kenshin DVDs and they had previews for this series GOKUDO on it and I didn't think much of it. But apparently he did cuz he bought 3 DVDs of it yesterday. I've only seen one episode but it just seems like an excuse to see how many wacky anime cliches one can cram into a swords and sorcery-type setting. If there isn't a scene where characters are fighting over the biggest piece of food by episode 4, I'll be *very* surprised. The main character is a Ranma Saotome-esque jerk (but w/o any redeemable qualities) and he's off to save a princess with his wacky magical companion. The animation quality is pretty low, too. But then again I've just seen ROD and Big O (again! ^_^) in the same day, so my expectations are pretty right now.

Got to see Witch Hunter Robin episodes 3 and 4 the other day. It's a pretty neat series about a special unit of agents that only handle cases related to witches. Of course some memebers of that agency are witches as well. They even have rankings like A class or S class.
Like mentioned before it has the X-files vibe to it. Each case having bizarre enemies and even cooler ways of taking them out.

Hey, I just didn't want you, or anyone, to get all Big O over it since I imagine the story cuts off after ep.43. :B
As for Bebop, my take is that Cain Kuga made the manga without actually seeing the actual show, so they cancelled her story and went with the artist of the other manga.... which also wasn't that popular since it only lasted 3 volumes.
In both cases, the creators try to tell too much of the story thru dialogue (it's a VISUAL MEDIUM!!! damn it) and of course they tend to fall back on anime-stereotypes.
Now, for a great anime-to-comic example, there's Tenchi Muyo, which has 14 volumes and it's still going. It's not really anymore talky that its anime counterpart, and the art and gags are quite good.
So is Big O. READ BIG O!

Da-da-da-dancing is forbidden...
I don't think they wanted her to see the series. She was given the opportunity to do an original story, given certain materials on the show. I think she mentioned this in one of the "Behind the Bebop's" at the end of Shooting Star. The stupid syndicate characters were kids compared to the Red Dragons on the show. Just bring over the Fantasy DX strips.
I don't know why they stopped the mangas. Granted, Watanabe seems firm in what happened to Spike (meaning no sequels).
As for GTO, it's odd they cut the show off in the middle. Did someone pull funding, or did they just decide it ran its course? Of course the manga is a thousand times better anyway...

I've just started watching Chobits, and I'm still kind of undecided on how I feel about it. I do like some of the elements it contains, but at the same time the whole MAGICAL GIRLFRIEND KAWAII HAREM OH SENPAI YOU TOUCHED MY BOOB! thing really makes me gag, and I frequently feel very ashamed watching it.
It seems to be cunningly structured so that every time something really gay happens (and puts me off the series for good) - something awesome or mysterious will happen soon after to draw me back into it. The fucks.

-tears of joy- OYAJI!!
I'm awaiting the second and third discs, for all I know the show could take a tumble. It doesn't seem nearly as gratuitous as Love Hina; Chii is a persocom, she doesn't know any better when presented with these situations ("underpants"). Of course, that just makes it all the more convienent to pull that stuff. The theme song is mind-numming, in the Steel Angel Kurumi (yay!) way.

I don't plan on ever watching this one. It was big at the anime-con, but mostly with girls and odd men. The English VA for Chi was at this same con and was quite surprised at the popularity of the series.
But what really took her aback was that men were watching another series she does, a series called "Sugar: A Little Snow Fairy". "Isn't that show supposed to be for little girls?" was her responce to a male fan's interest in it. On the bright side, it put my friend off buying it (thank god, bad enough that he buys Sailor Moon).
In a strange twist of fate, she is also the voice of Fujiko of Adult Swim's Lupin III.

There's quite a bit of Chobits hentai available, including one long-running series ("Aviv", I think), but most of it's of rather mediocre quality. And like SDS said, there just isn't enough material starring certain characters, like Yumi, Chitose, or Hideki's teacher lady. Everything's Chii, Chii, Chii... and occasionally one of the mobile Persocoms. Which puzzles me, as I can't figure out for the life of me why anyone's first thought upon seeing Plum would be "I'd hit it." Gah.
I've got a neat little doujin called Secret 02 that I'll put up for share in the hub tonight. In regards to Chobits itself, I think a review I read on "Anime Jump!" put it best: the series sets up all the usual situations/pitfalls present in harem and magical girlfriend shows, and then deftly sidesteps them. Hideki's not a Keitaro-level loser, just a nice guy who keeps accidentally befriending the girls he meets instead of trying to score with them. And over the course of the series, the three girls competing with Chii for Hideki's affections are taken out of the picture, leaving it more of a traditional romance story than a LH style grope-a-thon. As for Chii herself, she is a magical girlfriend type character, but later on this is used to add a bit of philosphy and introspection to the series.
It's definitely one of the few shows of its kind I can bring myself to admit to enjoying. I've started reading the manga again, in fact, and I'm lovin' it.

Yesterday I decided to go for another blind buy and bought "cosplay complex", a 3 episode series
It's a fun anime about 5 girls that work for their school's cosplay club and want to become the number one cosplayers. To achieve their goal the have to learn various disciplines (redress fast, put on way too small clothes etc.) and "fight" against other cosplayers. Aside from that there is no real storyline, but this anime never intended to be something more.
It's just comedy (gotta love italian pedophile lesbians), cute and eye candy and I'm fine with that (I'm currently reading Video girls eye so any dumb but fun anime is welcome), worth the 20 € it costed.

And in recent "lol" news:
Manga artist Tatsuya Egawa, best known in North America as the creator of Golden Boy recently directed a live action pornographic movie.
While the Golden Boy manga becomes pornographic as of volume two, and another one of his creations, Tokyo University Story, contains many H scenes, Egawa is also known for creating the popular kids manga Magical Taruruuto-kun.
Magical Taruruuto-kun and Golden Boy have both been animated, while Tokyo University Story was adapted into a live action TV drama.
At one point Kosuke Fujishima, creator of the Oh My Goddess manga was Egawa's assistant.
Akogare no Katei-Kyoshi ("The Private Tutor, Whom I Had So Much Wished to Be"), Egawa's new film (but not his first ever adult movie) is now on sale in Japan.

I've got a couple of episodes of COSPLAY COMPLEX shared. I heard it was pretty gratuitous, so had to download a couple. Haven't watched them yet, but flicked through one of the episodes and saw some chick dressed as Kasumi, and so: yes.
Those screenshots just make it all the more awesome. Do they actually say who they're cosplaying as, or are they just, as far as most people are concerned, wearing "outfits"?
Also - has anyone ever seen a Chobits desktop wallpaper with that freaky image of a Chii-type persocon with all metal stuff coming out of her, and the word 'chobits' on her leg? And in recent "lol" news, Manga artist Tatsuya Egawa, best known in North America as the creator of Golden Boy recently directed a live action pornographic movie.LMAO best news I've heard all day. If he could come up with something in live-action that's on the level of the last 4 volumes of Golden Boy (roughly, it consists of flashbacks to Keitaro's early college days containing several sex scenes that run 100s of pages each)... well damn.

Guilty Gear XX Sound Alive/A.S.H.
Since I'm a sucker for the music in this game, I picked up this CD. Live stuff is hit or miss with me...it doesn't sound as good as studio stuff, but live songs are very unique, and that can be a good thing.
This is just straightforward playing of the songs, the band doesn't really stray from them into improv solos or what not, and there isn't much talking. There's a few versions of some of the songs on the CD that sound a little more blues-y, done a little slower. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Japanese crowds at concerts are REALLY QUIET during performances; on US CDs, you could hear the crowd throughout the entire set. The crowd is pretty quiet on this CD, except for after some of the songs (where the band stops, rather than segue into the next song). I don't know where this "concert" was, but even when the crowd cheers, it's kinda small. I'm wondering where this took place. The guitar sound on this CD is pretty good...not as smooth as what you hear in-game and on the OST, but it's got style and it's got some POWAH.
Booklet is only a few pages, with pictures of the guys at the concert...everything is in Japanese of course. It also came with a sticker, which is just a picture of the cover again. This is a worthwhile pickup for fans of the game. General J-ROCK fans or metal fans or whatever might like it or might not. It's pretty straightforward play.
I also got the GTO OST 2 today, but none of you are interested in longwinded reviews on bootlegs, plus I haven't listened to it yet. But Onizuka likes Evangelion.
-where the hell is my Kurumi single...-
EDIT - and of course, within two hours of owning this thing, I drop the case on the floor and crack the front. :(

Slayer's woulda been cool. I was thinking of selling this CD...for like, 5 minutes. This is gonna find plenty of time in my changer/car stereo.
I've been going through NieA_7 more (got the box set) and I still love it lots. The opening song, although it's...well, crappy, is...well, good. :trannie And I love the closing theme too.
I'm waiting for Steel Angel Kurumi 2 (boobies!), Azumanga Daioh (like everyone else, just not as much), and the rest of Chobits. Ai Yori Aoshi and Full Metal Panic are on a "probationary period". The first DVDs were okay, but if the second discs aren't really good, I'm gonna sell. I need the money and I need to kill the lame stuff in my collection. And my VHS stuff, although that means I may never see Tenchi Muyo again (unless Target decides to sell the rest of the DVDs). Maybe I'll upgrade to the DVD copy of Strange Love instead... :spooge As for manga, FLCL, (maybe) Azumanga Daioh, the rest of GTO (better than anime by far), last two volumes of Love Hina, Steel Angel Kurumi (YAY!) and NieA_7 (delayed, from what I heard).

The first HELLSING DVD came out over here on Monday and I've just gotten around to watching it. Not sure what to make of it so far - but one thing that stood out immediately was how much effort the makers had put in to making "England."
It was a real surprise to see cars on roads, people wearing normal clothes, streets and buildings that looked contemporary ... trains and stations (Eurostar!) - they even got the police uniform right!
It was a refreshing change to see another country portrayed with people first, and stereotypes a distant second, and definitely a far cry from the England of the X-Men cartoons, where everyone lives in a castle and the streets aren't paved yet.
Cherrn
27th July 2003, 12:04 PM
They also have steak and kidney pie in a later episode! And the queen plays an integral part in the storyline. It isn't revealed in the anime, but in the manga you find out that the queen has personal ties to Alucard oo er.
I was kind of surprised to see how well they implemented London into the anime; especially considering how "knowledgable" Japan usually are when it comes to foreign cultures. Most of the English accents are pretty bland, though; but that's mainly 'cause it's Americans who dubbed it.
None of the characters have bad teeth though :(

Actually that reminds me - I seem to remember there's some hates-the-fans thing about HELLSING ... like it was never finished or it has a stupid ending or something.

And, for everyone who's been expecting it, yes, Victoria Seras = <3

27th July 2003, 04:21 PM
Many people dislike that while the creators meant for Hellsing's "universe" and characters to be incredibly deep and involving, it didn't quite succeed with only 13 episodes.
They're right, to a point. Personally, I think the series accomplished quite a lot in just 13 episodes. Yes, some points seem hurried, but if they didn't have a contract/money for more than 13 episodes, what can you do?
I'm perfectly satisfied with what's there.
Others argue that there could've been a lot more character development in the series (MORE ANDERSON), perchance flesh out Seras' "beast side" that's appears in episode 4, but never shows up again. Oh, and young Walter.
Also, many "hardcoer" fanz hate the last story arc with Incognito. Probably 'cause it wasn't in the manga (which is radically different from the series, anyway).
Seems like it's a love it or hate it thing. I loved it.

Concerning Hellsing:
From what I understand, there was a major dispute between the anime creators and the manga writer himself, due to the massive difference between the manga and the show.
See, the anime only followed the manga up until episode seven or so; then all of a sudden it went off on its own arc, simply because they ran out of manga material to base it on. This is also known as the Kenshin Syndrome; meaning that the anime surpasses the manga in story content, making shit up as it goes. Incognito had nary a mention in the manga, much less being featured as a full-blown (and horribly gay) villan as witnessed in the show.
Due to the argument, I've heard that there will probably not be a continuation of the Hellsing anime; or they're waiting for more of the manga to come out so they can actually do something right with it. The show was also not very popular in Japan, either, so that may hinder the chances of a second Hellsing season to ever come out.
Then again, if Big O Season 2 is any indication, we may see something related to the Hellsing anime down the line, thanks to international support. Hellsing, as far as I know, is rather liked in the states.
P.S: Last Exile is the best fucking show.
P.P.S: Don't get me wrong; I loved Hellsing even with Incognito; but I think he at least could have been a bit more well-developed.

Finished watching Video Girl Ai yesterday. I guess it's an OK anime, but it can't keep up with the manga as it lacks some seriousness and the ending stinks of umm...

I got a little fed up with that as I've seen and read it so many times before, I'd rather had them try something more creative.
The manga is great nontheless, among the best "serious" stuff I read so far.
DNA^2 is up next on my "schedule". It looks fine so far, but nothing ground moving, might be a good view after a frustrating day at work. I need that because I'll soon run out of Comic Party epsiodes.

W00t finally got broadband so i can download anime.
Currently I'm having a look at Airmaster, Onegai Twins and Neo Getter Vs. Shin Getter. Onegai Twins is weird - is it supposed to be a Love Hina style anime? coz it seems so serious sometimes.
There's a lightness in Love Hina that's not in Twins - and there seems to be way to much contrived poignancy.
Seriously I can finally appreciate how gr@t3 Keitaro is now that I;ve seen the main male leads in the genre. The dude in Twins is just ...boring... No wonder Keitaro's such a studly dudley - I love you too Kei-kun!
Airmaster has to have the coolest closing credits EVAH! teh gratuitous bounce, the crazy running, the bizarrely awesome float of Renge! I'm still not sure about the show itself though... There was this review site that gave Airmaster a ZERO outta five!- that said the same site was in love with Full Metal Panic and I thought that FMP was average at best.

Naw, I gave up on hating on Excel. I decided that I just don't feel like I have enough time to invest in getting it. Seems like you have to know more about anime than I do. I can't know enough about it to keep track of all of the inside jokes in that anime.
I mean, it's just like how someone who doesn't understand very much about pop culture in america couldn't get the simpsons. Doesn't mean it's not good or even great for those who can understand it.
But the term overrated just never sat right with me. Always seemed like saying, "Well at first it was cool, but now that people are acknowledging it and giving it the credit it deserves, it doesn't seem as cool."
I saw a couple of episodes of FLCL, and I can honestly say that I have no idea what's going on at this point. I saw yesterday's ep and it was entertaining, but I didn't know what was going on. Still gonna watch it though.

I can appreciate it for what it is, it's a very unique show with GAINAXy animation (and guitars!). I like FLCL and I'm glad I own the DVDs and was able to watch it and everything. But if someone was to compare this to anime that made sense or had a story, you can't do it. On its own, or compared to other wacky shows, maybe (but I'll take NieA and Excel over it), but compared to more serious works, no. It kinda takes a special place in your heart I guess, but when you deal with the anime community, you deal with plenty of fanboys and fangirls that make you wanna trade in whatever anime you have for a classical music collection.
Well, from personal experience, I don't own many serious animes so I'm hard pressed to back up any of this. Neil, I'm actually baffled as to what to say. Like the show, glad its on TV, I just think fan reaction to it blows it out of proportion. Regardless, I still like it. I'll leave up that above part for blackmail plots and the like.

One thing though, if "fan reaction to it blows it out of proportion" - I ask you ... so what? Is the thought of other people finding greater joy in something than you yourself do somehow offensive?
If someone I'm with recognises/infers references and meanings in a product that I don't, for whatever reason, I certainly don't get panicky and defensive ... and I would never begrudge them the greater appreciation they gain for doing so ... so again, what does it matter?
I can't believe you'd just rail against something because of the type of people it attacts ... you're a fighting game fan, for fucks sake! The entertainment medium where the top players have gay sex with each other in bushes and then trawl the internet looking for opposing opinions to theirs so they can shriek at them like mongoloid babies! I'm just a different sort of fan/player. I don't consider myself railing against the series, if I were to do that I would have sold my FLCL DVDs. I don't know if you read this part, but I like the show. It isn't my favorite series (Bebop), and it isn't on my list of favorite series. (Bebop/Kurumi/NieA/Lupin/Love Hina). But I like it. People are entitled to like what they want, but I don't consider FLCL to be "THE show" that a lot of other people do. I just don't, and I never will. If other people want to consider it "THE show", fine, I just think they're wrong. II'll go back and say that it's overrated, and you can dispute that term all you want, but that's my opinion on the show. That is NOT to say I don't like it.
This is what I said about it on the AnimeonDVD.com forums:
It's a funny show, lots of wacky stuff, and lots of down-to-earth serious stuff. It's GAINAX alright. In all honesty, I think the show is overrated. If it made a little more sense, that would be one thing. I enjoy it, but when I tell people to watch it, I tell them it doesn't make a lot of sense, it's just a token wacky anime. The two people that I've told this to, don't like the show.
Everyone go watch NieA_7. :D

But you can't have "people can like what they want" as well as "they're wrong for liking it" at the same time - can you?
And then there's the fact you called it a "token wacky anime", when I got much, much more from it than that. Am I "overrating" it, or did you miss the point? Who decides? Actually, who gives a shit? :D
I really have no problem with people liking things, or not liking them -- you don't need to justify that, not to me or anybody ... it's only when whomever starts telling other people that they're "wrong" for liking something, or seeing something - or even worse, that they don't really like it, they just think they do, that I get rambunctious.
Hence my dislike of the "overrated" phenomenon.

Odds are good I'll buy the DVD's just to send money in hopes of encouraging more. Very good stuff, on par with (and like the bastard love child of) El-Hazard and Evangelion. FLCL is what I hope to find in anime`periodically.Heh, now it has you as well. I recommend watching it a second time if you haven't already.
There was this 20(!)-page article about FLCL in PULP magazine about a year ago, and one of the things the author said about it was that it was the first real anime of the 21st century, that it wasn't just a remake or rehashing of an older concept and that it had something to say.
I too would love to see more FLCL, but I think that the story is over and done. But who knows, they were able to get more episodes of Big O so anything's possible. Then again, O ended on a cliffhanger and FLCL doesn't, really.

I mean, it's good for T&A and all, but the lack of a plot and the female-slavery rubs me the wrong way, although it is pretty funny to see this Golden-Boy-type character telling women that "You WANT to serve me, that's all you were born to do!".

I actually ended up liking the thing. It's another one of those shows that goes 'dark' or 'weird' towards the end. In fact I found myself wishing they'd taken this approach from the outset, instead of subjecting me to 14 or so episodes of boob-falling, blushing, poorly hidden porn magazines and a neverending stream of ... wait ... did she just .... just say.... no ... it can't be ... BIG CLOSE UP OF DISTORTED FACE!!!!
Not funny.
Whomever said that CHOBITS cleverly sidestepped the traditional harem anime cliches was lying. It actually falls, face-first into their heaving teenaged bosom, over and over again, tears streaming (like waterfalls) from it's face.
And yet it still managed to pull something out of the whole mess, and I felt the ending was nicely satisfying, as in it actually addressed the primary plot point that had been running through the entire series, and answered it, and resolved it. Yay.
There was also a subtext I felt running through the whole thing - one warning against the evils of videogames and anime, of living your life vicariously through technology and getting wrapped up in it to the detriment of the outside world. While Motosuwa was messing around with his gay robot little girl, his friend was screwing the hot schoolteacher and Yumi-chan was banging the owner of the cakeshop (married a persocon lol) - presumably in her waitress outfit.
It's a moral we could all learn a lot from.
However for me the highlight of the entire series was undoubtedly Shinbo's mobile Persocon, Sumomo. She was awesome from start to finish, and should definitely have been the main character. Definitely a ^_^ on the <:_:;; scale.
And I just can't believe there is actually Sumomo hentai out there.
I can't believe I LOOKED for Sumomo hentai in the first place.
Never mind. It's not as much of a "girls" series as one might think, and is probably worth checking out if you can stand it. It's certainly nowhere near the abomination that is LOVE HINA.

Also, fresh from the delights of HELLSING the other week, I am delighted to report that episode 17 of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is also set in London. And like 'Hellsing', they've done an admirable job of recreating the city. Red buses (obvious) - red telephone boxes (a bit out of date), black taxis and, like Hellsing, even the correct police uniform.
Motoko even dresses up in the traditional policeman's garb for one scene, which is probably someone here's ultimate deviant fetish or something. But not me, I can tell you.

My absolute favorite scene in Chobits is when Chii is taken to that peep show and she sticks her finger into one of the peep holes and gouges someone's eye. Then the guy who "kidnapped" her and told her to do some finger action and put her finger in her hole, and she points to the peep hole where she just blinded someone and asks, "Chii?"
That alone made the show good.
McGuirk

THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH CHOBITS NEIL! I'm pretty sure when they developed Chii, CLAMP realized all the bad hentai and possible fanservice situations they could put her in. Chii comes off like that a bit, but she's so fucking adorable. I've totally skipped the spoiler post so I don't know what you said, but I'm sure I would be crying right now if I did.
RE: Please Teacher and its awfulness - I stand by my word. The storyline is unfuckingbelievable in the sense that I WANT TO BLOW MY BRAINS OUT and the dub cast is awful. Mizuho is hot though, Utils' avatar is about the only good to ever come out of that show.

Actually I had a fair few good things to say about it.
Could have done without 70% of the episodes, though. Although that said, I guess the more you get to know and like the characters in a day-to-day setting, the more shocking it is when GAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYY.
And for every one scene where Chii is cute, there are five or six where she needs a kick in the teeth. Sumomo is far superior to her, in every respect.
McGuirk
18th August 2003, 04:54 PM
She's cute too, but she has more opportunities to be obnoxiously cute. Granted, I love it when Chii "chii"'s, and that probably wears out people (in more ways than one).
BTW, anyone in the US that lives near a Coconuts music (or Strawberries) should check out their used DVDs. I just got back and probably could have spent over a hundred bucks, if not for the fact I had to buy my textbooks. I bought -cough- All Purpose Catgirl Nuku Nuku...passed on 3 Lain DVDs (didn't have the first), Read or Die, Risky Safety (if it's anything like Sugar, FORGET IT), Burn Up Excess (the original series still burns in my eyes, Variable Geo (have it on VHS), Saiyuki, and Noir (the box didnt have the shirt or decoder glass :( ) They also have some Trigun DVDs and the Evangelion box set (!), which I already have, token DBZ and Gundam stuff.

I don't know how the anime turned out compared to the manga, but I still think that Chobits doesn't over-indulge in cliches in the case of the latter. There are no accidental engagements, no wacky groping and subsequent wacky punishment, and most of the hot female supporting characters end up leaving by the end of the story. And of course, Chii isn't violently jealous whenever Hideki is with other girls, unlike so many harem anime heroines. Let's see Ranma get friendly with his sexy teacher without getting The Mallet of Death.

Bought Colorful on Friday. Fuckin A, as the news reporter says. Love it.
What's even better than the anime itself is the extra "behind the scenes" of the voice actors (the american ones). I think you should watch the whole thing. The twist isn't a twist, nor does it have a shred of dramatic impact if you just come in after or while it's happening. You only really notice it if you've got the earlier episodes to contrast it with.
As gay as a lot of the early stuff is, it sets up a groundwork of concepts and character relationships that do come into play later on. And it's never actually awful. There are two or three episodes where I sat there thinking "why the fuck am I watching this?" but even the worst ones have boobs and kawaii and huggles.
And Sumomo.
If you really can't face it (but don't say I didn't warn you) - start watching at episode 15. That's when the angst starts.

I just realized after watching the 7th episode of Airmaster - that this is probably one better animes I've seen in a while! I guess this realization was made all the more apparent after watching the IMO god-awful Ikkitousen.
Sure Ikkitousen has more gratuitous (and BETTER i might add) T&A, but Airmaster is like Sagat in CVS2 - brutally good, fat-reduced @ss-kicking anime with attitude. Sure Airmaster has its bells and whistles (not the least of which is its premise- school girl fighting haha panties) - but you don't even NOTICE this in the show sometimes - honestly most of the characters are pretty ugly- Maki is just such a total bad@ss - and the no-nonsense (by that i mean the lack of super duper powerup/fireballs/secret touch of death moves) approach to fighting is REALLY refreshing. It's not about destiny or revenge or whatever, just a bunch of people who like to fight - it's like a whole series based on Ryu's ending!- but GOOD!
What's even better are the pseudo-references to streetfighter. Maki is essentially Ryu who fights like chun li. KEN is her FREAKIN'
father! She's not glamorous lives in a sh1tty flat, but boy can she kick @ss. I swear - Capcom better have her as an honorary character or somethin' in SF.
Ikkitousen is just l@me. Recycled dumb girl with super powers/destiny/big t1ts - schoolyard conspiracies - 16 year olds ruling the earth type inanery. That and I find their rather one sided interpretation of Three Kingdoms as fairly narrow-minded.

I mean - before I dlded Ikkitousen I read a host of 'Ikkitousen is such a good cartoon blah blah blah... omg you see her @ss EVERY SECOND shot' reviews - and frankly I was quite disappointed (not by the T&A - by the fact that the show seemed as shallow and one-dimensional as its protagonist). I also read a host of 'Airmaster is dumb, I can't believe shows like this still get made' reviews - so I dunno.... are internet anime nerds on crack or am I?
Just wondering how on earth I'm gonna choose what to dld with limited bandwidth... stoopid isp...

Probably both. I've just picked up watching this again, and am wholly enjoying it. That said ... it's not exactly high art, is it? And that's probably why it gets criticism from your internet anime nerd buddies. Lots of tits, even more fighting, some 'comedy' .. each character has a trait or characteristic that they'll do every episode, and that's your lot, really.
Now I personally have no problem with that, hell, some of my favourite things could be considered base and simplistic (I'm still a huge "Dragonball" fan) -- but at the same time, things like DB, or Airmaster, where it's more about doing one thing really well than doing thirty things at once ... they're easy pickings for the nasal, whiny online anime poser.
I say: to hell with them, and bring on the AIR MASTER hentai.

Alien Nine.
I picked this little "gem" up at BAAF on Sunday, expecting an action/comedy featuring three little girls fighting aliens, whilst donning symbiotic alien helmets as protection.
Man...was I thrown for a loop. I describe it to my friends as "Two parts Evangelion, one part Azumanga Daioh, minus religious references". The symbolism used is astounding, and they manage to cover everything from adolesence, rape, lonliness, lesbianism, and suicide, all topped off with a giant nutsack reference...all while still making the art look at cute as possible.
I suggest you at least pick it up and try and not feel the urge to hit the main character due to her whininess. I also suggest you don't turn off the DVD player when the final credits roll, since you'll miss something quite important. Lastly, I suggest at least viewing this lovely feature at least once, then watch it again in hopes of you not hating it; because I know damn well I did at first, but after thinking about it for some time (and viewing the damn thing again) I realized that this thing was...pretty fucking good.

Dragon Ball.
Seriously, these DVD super-sets rock. 15-17 eps for only $40. It has the original Japanese music. And they even did a good job of dubbing the opening and closing songs.
Love Hina Again: Okay, I read the manga this is based on already (#11-13), so I knew what was going to happen. I guess I didn't expect Naru's journey across Japan to be replaced with that "magic annex". And I guess that's the last of Love Hina unless they've done another OAV based on #14 (the last one).

The "Tenkaichi Budokai" set is great, because there's such a small amount of filler stuff, and what's there is actually quite well done - so the whole thing is basically great, with some really neat moments.
On the other hand, I've actually given up on the RED RIBBON ARMY set ... because the filler is absolute mind-numbing shit of the worst possible kind, and it goes on for fucking ever. The stuff with Pilaf's death star, Goku's "wedding", the followup adventures of Namu (Jesus!) ... terrible. After about seven episodes of sitting there shouting "THAT DOESN'T HAPPEN!" I just gave up, and am reluctant to get any of the other sets, lest the same be true for them.

Also, he picked up Legacy of Goku II.... I saw him playing it on his Gamecube's Gameboy Player, I thought he was playing Wild Arms or something. Good graphics for a portable game. I haven't played it, but it seems like an RPG good enough to play while you're waiting for a better game to come out, and you can suspend disbelief re: things like Z fighters not being able to fly over a parade or whatever that fetch-quest Neil spoke of in another thread, long ago...

Oh man is it ever great. They had a suprise showing (and then another one due to word of mouth) at the Big Apple Anime Fest and it got a collective reaction from the packed fanboy crowd of OH MY GOD THIS IS THE GREATEST FUCKING THING WE HAVE EVER SEEN. At that first showing everybody was already familiar with Fist so stuff like Kenshiro's first appearance, "you're already dead", and AAAAAAAAAA-TATATATATATA-WA-TAAAAAA nearly got standing ovations. They probably would have, but you know, then nobody can read the subtitles. Anyway, I can't recommend it enough to the rest of you guys. It's the exact same format as every single Fist of the North Star episode, but that doesn't mean it isn't a LOT of fun to watch. And man, their animation budget has got to massive.

Anybody checked out the newest fansubbed Airmaster episode. Sakiyama Kaori is truly awesome. I haven't been this into a cartoon since... since... LOVE HINA!!!!
And what I love about this is that even though Maki wins all the time I don't mind it. I've seen some fighting anime when I've ended up hating the dude who ALWAYS wins - but not here- dunno why.
If you check out the later episode ads on the website, the episodes from now on all seem to be about the 'Fukamichi ranking'. Basically all the dudes that have appeared so far and others are gonna be officially ranked for each of their streetfights-as close to a tournament as you're gonna get I guess. There's some site with the current rankings and the top four are taken up by peeps who haven't shown up before.
I'm a bit worried that Sakiyama isn't there nor is Ken... I mean Saeki...Jullietta is and so is the gangster leader dude. We know how this is gonna end coz the guy at the top is the guy who Maki is about to fight with at the beginning of episode 1.
Other thing is that Airmaster is actually a comic isn't it. I've got no complaints with the TV show - but what's the comic up to? anybody got translations?

Yeah, Maki and Kaori kicking the crap out of the Power Rangers and every other Japanese masked superhero was truly a sight to behold.
Though I do wish someone'd kick Maki's ass. Maybe that black-haired chick in the opening sequence will be the one; if not the guy in the ranking.
I wonder if the whole Fukamichi thing is interactive; I.E. being able to vote on fights. Seems to me that there'd have to some degree of dynamic selection if there's both a website and a live-show. It's interesting nonetheless.

The FLCL manga is dynamite. It follows the story of the anime pretty closely, but with added bits here and there, like you get to see Naota's brother. The art style is not the same as the "manga" in the anime, though. It's drawn in a style that combines the craftmanship associated with most manga with "alternative" American comics. That is to say, it looks totally different from the anime and yet somehow all the characters look like themselves and it suits the story. Only 2 volumes long, so it'll end up costing you less than one volume of the anime (region 1).

You know I picked that up the other day. While I was standing in the queue to pay for it I was flicking through it and my initial impression was "well, this looks absolute shit": I could barely recognise any of the characters, or situations, and I didn't really think that FLCL without its music and gorgeous watercolour-esque artwork would really be FLCL at all. In fact I was already preparing my Underkill-esque online howl of derision as I made my way back home.
But when I actually sat down and read the thing, I really enjoyed it. Despite the bizarre (you could almost call it "crap") art style and often radical departure from what I knew (and loved) about the series ... it still worked, extremely well. The dialogue is great, and it still maintains that jumbled, screaming passion. And most importantly, it was still fundamentally FLCL.
And Haruko is far more psychotic and aggresive than she is in the anime. http://highervoltage.net/mb/images/icons/icon14.gif

Right now I'm a big fan of Scrapped Princess. I'm on the 21st(latest) episode and I must say it's much, much more than your conventional fantasy tale. In fact, nothing like it. It's a slow starter like many other series out there, but it won't be long 'till you fall right in. If I go into the story at all it's like a spoiler, so I won't. But I will say, head on over to Animesuki and get it before the liscencees snatch it away.

I've had it on the HD for a little, and I watched it this morning. I liked it.The visuals are unquestionably beautiful. When I saw the trailer I thought that the 2D and CG coming together would be ugly, as it often is. Actually watching the movie made me change my mind. Everything comes together so well you barely notice the difference between hand-drawn and CG. Plus it's not just a bad movie with pretty things all over it. It's a pretty damn good movie with pretty things all over it. I sure as hell hope that the studio responsible for this film is able to do more work.
So yeah. Guys, see this movie.
