Just watched Hokuto no Ken: Raoh Gaiden. Realized I had forgotten how awesome HnK is.

LOL Yeah, the first True Saviour Legend movie was pretty damn good...can't wait to see the others.
I also like how they took a DYRL-ish approach with the story rather than just simply retelling the first Hokuto series with new visuals.

My only complaint is that they STILL cannot find a suitable VA to replace Akira Kamiya, he will always have the perfect voice for Kenshiro.

Yeah, I like Tokiko as well, then again I have a thing for angry Anime chicks with scars. Also I heard that one of the requests that Watsuki made was that there be no Anime adaption of the series until he finished the Manga...I guess he didn't want what happened to Rurouni Kenshin happen to Busou Renkin.

Just finished Episode 17 and Papillon is still the most awesome character in that series.

I've watched the sneak preview of the Reideen remake, & it doesn't have the aspects of the original.
The mech itself changed it's characteristics, like the gold armor painting & a cockpit similar to G Gundam & RayEarth.

Didn't Akira manipulate Raideen partly with some thingies that attached to his arms and mimicked his movement? It seems like that would be the natural path to go down, then.

What are they fighting against in this version, anyhow?

Blood+ is less visceral than Blood the Last Vampire, it is heavy on character development and generally has good pacing (it does drag at times).

Don't go into it expecting it to be like the movie, Saya in the series is a mere schoolgirl who has to come to grips with who she really is. versus the all out killing machine portrayed in the movie.

It's a good watch, but the ending kinda sucks (wrapped up too quickly).

IBUKI-town

For me, the show fell apart around episode 36, and pretty much floundered at that point - it didn't really know where to go, and I think the writers got bored with it too.

Anyone watch BLOOD+ or know if it's decent? I remember liking the Blood: The Last Vampire movie.

First half of the series has some decent character development and nice build up. . . .but the second half takes all of the potential to be a great series and throws it in the trash.Watch the first couple of episodes to see how you like it but if you continue past episode 32+ prepare to be disappointed until the end.

Have you tried deleting all your codecs and then install CCCP again?

If it isn't the player, then have you checked to see if the MKV file in question is corrupted or unfinished/incomplete?

I'm disappointed that they had to resort to such a deus ex machina plot twist to keep the series going. The writer(s) shouldn't have painted themselves into that corner in the first place.

stone05
3rd April 2007, 10:58 AM
Long before the episode aired the title of the 22nd episode was already released and the whole Mao incident acted as a lead up. It isn't like crap, where do we go from here. If they give Lelouch new abilities or forget that he needs direct eye contact (ie. he can wear shades like Cyclops) then I could see some cause for concern.

Seeing as Kanon lost a lot of steam toward the end, Code Geass was probably the best anime of the recently ended season.

As for Kyoshiro no Sora. Sorry I need lesbians as the centerpiece. Kannazuki no Miko felt kind of different because I hadn't seen such a "so bad that it is good" series recently. But having seen that, the poor animation of Kyoshiro grew tiresome as did the female lead. Kyoshiro was great for about two episodes and his constant praising of himself grew old.

Busou Renkin was also pretty entertaining for a typical shonen series until it turned into one. 2-3 episodes in a row of watching good guys job to the villain. I knew it was a bad sign when the male lead transformed.

Onimaru
3rd April 2007, 11:01 AM

I don't really think it's a case of trapping themselves in a corner. They had already had hints of the Geass becoming unreliable/out of control over time.

And as a caring, compassionate member of Britannia noblity Euphemia was ALWAYS the biggest roadblock Lelouch could potentially run into. When you're trying to overthrow the old order, the last thing you need is someone offering you the olive branch.

And if they wanted to they could've just avoided the whole situation entirely, with a gradually escalating conflict between the Black Knights and the Empire....
.

So you should think of it as a way of injecting the plot with a heroin/crack cocaine mix that got it running like a bat out of hell so that the conclusion would be dramatic and action packed.

What's wrong with Matroska? Nearly every media player worth its salt nowadays can play the format. I've just had to tweak Media Player Classic a little the first time I've played one to make the embedded subtitles display, if they're softsubs. The only problem I have with it is I don't have a program that can burn a video DVD from them without having to use another program to convert them to AVI files first. Nero Vision only recognizes AVI and a few other formats for making video DVDs.

Hmm. I've never had problems with MPC to that extent (a rare crash or two, but that's about it). But yeah, I usually end up switching between players when I watch anime, and it's usually the MKV format that gives me trouble in both.

Yeah, Shin IS great. My favorite Hokuto no Ken character.

Also, I got a new anime... It's weird and funny, the only reason I got it at first was cuz Rie Kugimiya is the voice actor for one of the main characters. And well I am a fan of her voice. :s

The anime is called Hayate no Gotoku!, or "Hayate! The combat Butler!". The story line is really fucked up, it's about a boy who was really poor, both his parents didn't work, so the boy had to work himself to buy shit, even santa won't bring him presents cuz he says Hayate is too poor! XD

Funny story, likable characters, good animation, overall it seems like it's going to be a funny series for this season.

So has anyone seen Ergo Proxy? I discovered it totally by accident and it looks/sounds awesome. Anyone know if it's good?

I mean, the premise

"It is set in the future. A group of robots become infected with something called the Cogito virus, and become aware of their own existence. So these robots, which had been tools of humans, decide to go on an adventure to search for themselves. They have to decide whether the virus that infected them created their identity, or whether they gained their identity through their travels. This question is meant to represent our own debate over whether we become who we are because of our environment, or because of things that are inherent in us. The robots are all named after philosophers: Derrida and Lacan and Husserl."

HOW COOL IS THAT

It's an awesome mindfuck. It gets more and more surreal as the story progresses, and while there are some mediocre fillers from chapter 15 onwards, it's overall a great anime.

Just be aware that the story eventually focuses more on the character's backgrounds and their quest to know who they really are more than the premise from the initial chapters.

It's hard to be dissapointed with Ergo Proxy, give it a try.

Never bought from them. Most of my online Anime purchases come from rightstuf.com. Their specials and service have been excellent so I really haven't bothered with anywhere else.
"Brick boxset"? As in the "Berserk Complete Collection Brick"?
Couple of days ago rightstuf had a special sale of that thing for about $50-60. Dunno if its still there but if it isn't and the money isn't burning a hole in your pocket, wait till they get a sale on Media Blasters stuff, they usually knock off like 40%.

Claymore is kind of blah, but strangely watchable. I think it will have a plot worth a damn, but right now it's just Clare killing shit.

Lucky Star is strangely amusing. 1st ep was shit, next 2 were funny-ish. It's addicting.

Lucky Star is currently my favorite new comedy of the year. I love everything about it.

I also get a Mai Hime vibe watching iDOLM@STER Xenoglossia...I still kinda wish they just did an Anime based on the game...but eh, its got giant robots so I'm not complaining.

In semi-related news:

Then you have an intergalactic war between humans and aliens and Tarzan is the last hope for humanity. The reason? He can turn into a giant monster that rapes the badguys. Its a rather interesting story, great animation, decent helping of real-type robots and mysticism. Check it out guys!

Gaogaigar Hits Hiatus (11:01 AM EDT): Over the weekend, a post showed up at Toon Zone that indicated that NYAV Post was done with dub work on Gaogaigar. In contacting Media Blasters about it, we've learned that the series will be going on hiatus after the 06/05/2007 release of Gaogaigar Vol. #5 (of 10). Their Voltron project is simply taking up the bulk of their time and Gaogaigar is taking a back seat during it. Release dates for subsequent volumes will be coming at a later date but they did indicate that at this time the decision regarding the English language dub has not been determined.

...
So apparently Media Blasters thinks GoLion/Voltron > GaoGaiGar.
They need to realize that giant robot genre is not popular in America.
My question is:
Why bother acquiring a giant robot series like GaGaGa if they are not going to fully commit to the DVDs?
Not only is it being put on the backburner they may stop dubbing it all together! What the hell!? It was a pretty good dub, even if it had quite a few US Yugioh voices.

I freak'n bought all 4 current GaGaGa DVDs when they came out, I haven't even watched all of them but I HAD to have all of them because its my favorite super robot series. The only reason GoLion/Voltron will potentially sell better than GaGaGa is because Media Blasters is banking on the fact that guys like me who grew up watching the show will undoubtedly buy a proper release of the series and that is primarily due to nostalgia and little else. Its the same deal with Harmony Gold and Macross/Robotech.

Media Blasters is working on two shows that are primarily aimed towards a minority of US Anime fans. I'm in the that minority because I can actually remember watching Anime from the 80s because I was a child of the early 80s. I don't mind watching Anime from the 80's and 70's. However, that is very unusual...I recall a representative from ADV last year at an AX panel bluntly stated "It is hard to sell an Anime series from say, the 80s' because we've learned that the majority of fans think that Anime from before 2002 is "old" and most people don't normally buy old shows." There is a reason GaoGaiGar isn't selling and won't sell as well as GoLion/Voltron. 1)Its "old" and 2)It doesn't have a nostalgia factor that boosts sales.

What my problem with Media Blasters is that this decision has made them untrustworthy. What is the point on buying half a series with only half of the production value? If the last half of the DVDs are sub-only (which I don't mind since I can watch the whole thing raw) its not like its a remaster so I'm basically just buying what I've already seen before on TV or fansubs...oh but now I'm paying for it! GREAT! Which brings me to another point: I'm also a part of another minority in the Anime community because I actually love to buy my Anime when it become available in my native country. However, when companies like Media Blasters and ADV pull shit like this, its no wonder the Anime industry is considered a failing market; those that actually buy their Anime get screwed with brick&mortar traps.

Pretty sums up why I don't touch ADV manga. I would hate to get into a series and find out that it wasn't profitable enough to continue. Obviously, business wise it is understander able to stop money losing projects but it sort of puts potential readers. Funimation's Tsukuyomi (dvds) is great so far. Basically contains the dvd transfer which fixed at lot of the problems with broadcast art. 3 postcards by the original artist. Just a solid package overall. Oh and 4-5 episodes per disc.

Seriously though, I really hope that if the dub track is dropped that does mean there will be a pricedrop. Its not like the DVDs are remastered or anything since there are visible flaws in the footage because its a pretty old series. So if they do drop half of the production it will also affect the price accordingly.

So I just finished watching Toki o Kakeru Shōjo (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time), and it's a pretty awesome movie. Great animation and music, and a really charming story. After I finished I got that warm and fuzzy feeling I usually get from watching Miyazaki films, except this time there weren't any epic wars or huge monsters or crazy stuff like that involved. I highly recommend it!

Here's what it's about:
Makoto Konno, a girl attending high school in Tokyo's shitamachi, gains the power to go back in time and re-do things (the time-leap) when she gets involved in an accident at a train crossing one day.

A little bewildered with her new powers at first, Makoto uses them extravagantly to not be late and get perfect grades on tests, but soon things begin to turn bad as she discovers how her actions adversely affect others.

There's a torrent of it here (http://sinbios.org/Toki%20wo%20Kakeru%20Shoujo[H264%20768x416%20AC3%205.1ch%20DualAudio%20SubEng].mkv.torrent), if anyone's interested.

Hey, ADV did a really good job with their unedited versions of Saint Seiya. How they managed to fuck up the domestic release was only acquiring 60 episodes (why only get 60 from series with over 100 episodes?) of the series which stops 13 episodes short of the Sanctuary Saga. Then ADV makes the excuse that Toei isn't allowing them to license the remaining episodes.

Toei is letting companies in countries where Saint Seiya was successful (and thus has the nostalgia to back it up) release kickass DVDs, sure, but Shin is talking about the US specifically. This is the reason ADV has given us as to why they haven't acquired the rest - true or not, it's pretty much all we have to go by. I'm willing to give ADV the benefit of the doubt and take their word for it, though, if only because they've always been cool about releasing old anime that nobody else touches (Megazone, Area 88, Shadow Skill, Hakugei, etc). I believe this was also around the time that Toei started doing their own DVD releases directly in the US market, so it makes sense that they'd want to sit on one of their major franchises (regardless of whether or not it's actually major here). Of course, Toei's own North American releases sucked in terms of DVD quality (see: Air Master, Slam Dunk, etc) and they're back to licensing out their stuff to other groups, but it's impossible for us to say whether or not ADV has tried again since then or if Toei is still being silly about it or what.

I don't think anyone's denying that there's certainly less appreciation for Saint Seiya over here. When it finally started airing over here, it was a few years too late and being handled by DiC, of all companies. With that in mind, it's pretty damn good ADV got as much out as they did on uncut DVD.

The manga is still coming out, though, and that's great. Once Viz starts publishing something these days, there's no stopping them. :o

I'd be happy about the manga if Viz' edition didn't suck ballz :( At least I didn't like it. Specially because of that horrible translation.

Now that I think about it, in which episode did ADV get stuck? A bit before the Golden Knights arc? If that's so, then that's... fuck :( Then that means you still don't get the second best SS TV arc, Asgard (and fuck all people who dismiss it because "lol filler"... filler and whatever you want, but it's SUPERIOR to Poseidon arc).

Does anyone have any of those collages that show the shows that will be playing during the summer/spring season? Specifically I'm looking for any from last year (or this spring.)

I'm just looking for some anime to watch, and I figured that'd be the best way to find some.

ADV sent me this link to free episode one. I don't know if cookies are at work so I'll link to the ADV page and you can follow the breadcrumbs from there.

I only have the spring 2007 torrent still on my desktop. Most of which are on youtube anyway.

This is what I use to see what is coming up. And more importantly as someone who doesn't speak Japanese, which titles are probably going to get fansubbed.

Have you tried boxtorrents.com?
I downloaded a pack long time ago, not sure if it has all the soundtracks but I'm pretty sure it was most of them.

TMoHS is a good show with plenty of genuinely funny moments, and much of the humor is easy to understand. Though, I'd recommend that you watch the episodes in the order they were aired (they should already be set up that way depending on where you've downloaded obtained them from) to get the most enjoyment out of it. The episodes will be out of chronological order when watching them in that fashion, but you shouldn't have trouble putting everything together towards the end.

Also, Tsuruya is great.

Steve Blum and Wendee Lee are the reason I don't watch dubs anymore. :(

Anyway, I'll second the recommendation for MoHS, if you haven't picked it up already. It's a pretty interesting show, and Japan/4chan went totally crazy over it while it was airing.

...The way this particular show was presented when it first aired? Shit man, it's not just my recommendation, that's the order preferred by a majority of people who have seen the show from beginning to end.

I haven't heard the dub yet, but I am curious to know what's been done with that "God knows..." song.

Hopefully, it's been left untouched. I've long gotten used to English dialogue and Japanese singing side by side, and it should stay that way.

And I still can't wrap my head around the chaotic episode order. Why did they do it like that, and why do people like it? Maybe I should start watching other anime in a similar fashion: Middle first, ending somewhere in the middle, middle last, beginning somewhere stuffed in there :S

Is it like AzuDai? Not really...it does have a school setting and over half of the material in the series is comedic, which is a formula that automatically makes it popular in Japan.

I find the series to be great because of the clever use in nonlinear narration of the story (the episodes were aired in an anachronic order)*. Its a drama/slice of life series and that seamlessly inserted popculture references for comedy touched with a generous amount of symbolism. To me, it managed to keep the pacing of the series interesting from start to finish. There really isn't a series quite it, so its worth a look.

*it symbolizes Haruhi's chaotic mind...there is a reason for that.

Not at all, really.

It's mostly a slice of life comedy, but there are some fantasy/scifi elements that come into play a few episodes into the show. There really aren't any other shows out right now you could compare it to.

If the DVD's are in chronological order instead of broadcast order, as I've heard, I'd actually recommend d/ling the series instead. The story wouldn't suffer much from being in the proper order, but it's fun trying to piece everything together as you go along.

Apparently the original broadcast DVDs will start with the second special edition set; it will be 5 episodes English subs only.
IIRC all the Haruhi DVDs (that includes Japan) have the episodes in chronological order. What makes the US "special edition" so special (beyond the cool case, Music CDs and various collectable junk) is that from Vol.2 and on they'll include DVDs of the original broadcast. Depending on where you buy your Anime, the Vol.1 SE should be about $60 and Vol.2 around $50-60. I assume later volumes should be around the same price as Vol.2. This will be the first time in nearly 7 years I'll actually buy Bandai DVDs without a sale/coupon.

As others like myself have mentioned, its required that you see the series in its original broadcast format. A good example is how the the first episode that aired symbolized and foreshadowed later events and characters in the story and basically explains why the episodes are supposed to be anachronic.

Its 50 bucks at Best Buy.

Also, are sub only DVDs usually this expensive:

DVD 1 (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/releases.php?id=8890)
DVD 2 (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/releases.php?id=8891)

DVD 4 (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/releases.php?id=8893)

I think Bandai should of wait till Galaxy Angel X got done dubbing before releasing Galaxy Angel Rune.

I don't know about the average price of a subs-only release (on account of nobody makes them anymore), but Honneamise overprices the shit out of everything they release.

Screw them for getting the rights to Gunbuster when some other studio had supposedly liscenced it. I'm not paying $60+ for a three episode series. :/

Shin ATproof

Actually, wasn't Gunbuster a 6 episode series? Also IIRC Honneamise is basically Bandai visual, therefore it explains the high price. Call me crazy but I'd willingly pay $60 for remastered Aim for the Top! on DVD...

I'm assuming you mean Manga Entertainment, who had the rights before? They sat on it for years and did nothing with the license, so fuck them.

As for Bandai Visual's pricing, for the Gunbuster set, it actually makes some kind of sense, as it's a fuck-all absolute top notch release. Galaxy Angel Rune, however, is the result of bizarre Japanese interpretation of what US anime fans want and desperation to make more from increasingly expensive productions. You might be glad to know, however, that fans have brought this to the attention of Bandai Visual USA's CEO directly. (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2007-04-10/fans-confront-bandai-visual-about-pricing) Whether or not that makes a difference, I guess we'll see - surely the sales figures will say something if that didn't get through.

And you can't complain about it not having a dub because you don't even watch dubs :p

I have Gunbuster 2 (Diebuster) vol.1 which I found for $30 and that's an hour long. I figure that it's what I paid for volumes of FLCL (which shares staff with G2) so I'm okay with it.

Eh, I dunno. Nowadays most anime DVD's offer 4-5 episodes a disc for $20-30. I'm already finicky enough about buying anime as it is; I'm not too keen on the idea of paying even more for less.

At this point, I don't see how GuLa can truly fail unless Gainax manages to take the Eva route with the story instead of the traditional route, which is what makes this series so enjoyable.

We're at like episode 11 and its filled with almost nothing but win. Awesome gattai action, crazy super attacks (Giga Drill Breaker is like the new Goldion Hammer), Kamina, GAR Simon, Yoko (My wife), Nia (love!), Noboyuki Himayama (greatest VA for any super robot series)...this is easily my favorite Super robot show since Godannar. The only way this can get better is if GARlock Simon really does take on the whole universe and win.

I know what you mean. Until recently, I had around 25 GB of Anime stored on my HD. Some old series (G Gundam, Hokuto no Ken, Nadesico) some new series (Lucky Star and Muteki Kanban Musume) and the two Golgo 13 movies that I thought I could completely watch by the end of May.

Out of all of that, those two movies and MKM were the only ones that watched. I ended up stalling in the middle of HnK, deleted G Gundam when I wasn't even halfway through (seen it before, anyway), and I've still got Nadesico to actually start & Hellsing Ultimate 3 to watch.

Never again will I attempt watching so much at one time. I have the tendency to place focus on one, steadily care less about the others, and when it's time to watch a different series/set of movies, I can't find the urge to go through with it. :/
</rambling>

Anyway, I'll probably track down Death Note & Claymore somewhere down the line, but in the meantime I'm sticking with Wangan Midnight & Lucky Star. Wangan Midnight is centered around highway racing and is produced by OB Planning, the same studio behind Initial D, so I've got high expectations for that. Lucky Star is as cute and as random as you've heard from anyone, but it's hearing Bitter Akira at the end of every episode that seals the deal for me. Devil May Cry 01 seems to be subbed (apparently not that well), so I might check that out as well.
