Here we go, straight off the RSS:

Luminator DS (http://ds.ign.com/objects/903/903213.html), a Lumines clone.

Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution (http://ds.ign.com/articles/800/800460p1.html?RSSwhen2007-06-28_160900&RSSid=800460)

Geometry Wars - Hands On. (http://ds.ign.com/articles/800/800251p1.html?RSSwhen2007-06-28_080500&RSSid=800251) You know, while reading this it becomes very clear why you need TWO screens instead of one. If there were only one screen, controlling this game would be impossible with your finger in the way. Looking VERY forward to it. My fears are gone.

UMK3 trailer. (http://media.ds.ign.com/media/881/881594/vids_1.html)

Nervous Brickdown Review - Quite possibly the finest Breakout game since...well, Breakout. (http://ds.ign.com/articles/800/800802p1.html?RSSwhen2007-06-29_172800&RSSid=800802)

Okay, the ROMs will go in this post. We'll store a bunch of links here.

If anybody has a ROM site to share, hit me up on aim, post it here, or send me a PM (http://www.highervoltage.net/mb/private.php?do=newpm&u=1744). This way if you're looking for no rom in particular, you don't have to go through the thread looking for links. Don't worry about the RSS thing, I'll find them (if available) myself. Just send your ROM links my way.

Moppi Flower Effect for NDS (http://www.moppiproductions.net/)
- This flower demo is kinda cool. You should download the screen saver for PC if you always have music playing.

Phidias (http://sivullinen.fi/nds/projects.php?subaction=showfull&id=1173373766&archive=&start_from=&ucat=2&)
- Another paint program. I prefer Colors over this but I've seen some nice things painted with Phidias. The way it renders your lines after you draw them annoys me.

Step 1: Buy R4DS from realhotstuff, the combo pack with the 1gb jap sd card is great.
Step 2: Torrent site or nds-roms.com
Step 3: Load Kernal onto SD card
Step 4: Load .nds files

I use the slot 1 Supercard. Portrait of ruin is keepng me away from pokemon. I'm a sucker for collect-a-thons

It probably helps that I figured out a way to dupe items.

1. Collect Underpants
2. Talk to wind
3. Obtain quest item
4. Exit Screen.
5. If you have less than 9 items, go back to step 1
6. Sell items to Vincent.
7. If you don't feel you have enough money, Go back to step 1
8. ???????
9. Profit!

Well this won't do, the point of getting rid of the previous one was to create a whole load of individual game discussions, not a slightly smaller generic juggernaut. Getting rid of one 400-page thread and having it replaced with two, 200-page threads instead wasn't exactly what I had in mind.
Nervous Brickdown Review - Quite possibly the finest Breakout game since...well, Breakout. (http://ds.ign.com/articles/800/800802p1.html?RSSwhen2007-06-29_172800&RSSid=800802)
I have a strange fondness for Breakout games, and have done ever since Batty (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batty_%28video_game%29) on the ZX Spectrum, which I discovered long before Breakout, or Arkanoid, or any of the other versions. I have very little time for most 'classic' retro games from before 1989, but give me a Breakout clone and I'm happy for ages.

I've even got one on my phone, which combines breaking blocks with buying presents for virtual 2D girls.

And this DS one is pretty good, too. Drawing your own bat with the stylus is fun. :)

So you locking this or what? Because I'm not wasting my efforts if you're locking it. I'm also not making a new thread for each individual DS game. The major ones, yes. But Major brickdown would have never gotten its own thread.

I still think there needs to be a ROM database. But if you're locking this I'm not wasting my time updating the second post.

EvilNeil
1st July 2007, 10:22 AM
Rom database sounds fine by me. And I do see what you're saying, that it is unrealistic to expect a discussion for every game, no matter how tiny and uninteresting, but at the same time there's got to be a better option than just doing almost exactly what we were doing previously. You know that this'll be the official DS thread within hours, otherwise.

Make a forum for generic video game news. I have no problems spamming that forum with news. At the same time, we could have a sticky with ROM databases for ALL systems that I'll have no problems keeping updated. So long as I'm told about them, that is.

The thing is, I'm more likely to create a new thread for a DS game RELEASE like pokemon or whatever. But if there isn't much to discuss in the news then yeah, the thread just acts as a placeholder for the future. Which won't happen because someone will either forget it was created several months ago and won't search.

Though I'm glad the search nazi faggots seem to have quieted up a bit.

According to Midway, it will be the arcade version. Those were mockups. And if it is the arcade version, Classic Sub-Zero, Millenna, and Ermac better stay unlocked this time.

The Simpsons DS. I was impressed at how good it looks. The platforming isn't all that though. It seems like it could be great in a Yoshi's Island meets The Lost Viking kind of way if EA are creative with the level design.

EA and creativity don't mix though.

I'm just curious, how good is DS emulation right now?

I still don't see it being near as good as the real thing, whenever they reach a good compatability level, with common PC input devices right now. Things like Ouendan would be hard to play with a mouse, and a WACOM tablet isn't the same when you're not actually tapping a screen, but just a blank tablet, so your aim gets harder to use. For games where the touch-screen doesn't really have that many images you need to touch, say having more of a use like Star Fox Command, where you just sort of use it as a touch pad except for the bomb usage, it could work. I think only something like a Cintiq monitor would give near the same control and experience.

As for actual current compatability status, it doesn't look like that many commercial games work well with any known DS emulator yet.

it seems like they are sold out though, and they raised the price to $30.

Well, turns out Drawn To Life is a bust. But Sonic Rush Adventure is the best thing since, well, the last Sonic Rush. Sonic and Tails fly their biplane into a typhoon and end up in Australia (which turns out to be more upside down than first perceived). You end up collecting materials for building various items and sea faring vehicles. Plus you can freely explore the world map as far as your current vehicle's range allows. Works a little like Starfox Command only this is a good game. There are other side missions which will net you rings or items or Sol/Chaos Emeralds (usually ends up being a repeat boss fight). Anyway stop fucking around and play this.

It plays out like a Sega CD FMV game, it that the only way to tell when you're supposed to do something is when the grainy FMV stops and loads incessantly (thought that may just be my supercard. The minigames aren't challenging or fun and Daffy is nowhere near as funny as the cartoon short this game is biting off of. There is almost no soundtrack, odd because I thought the teaser gameplay trailer they showed was merely an unfinished product and not actually devoid of music. Thanks for ruining my childhood you assholes who made this mess.

So far The Simpsons game is quite boring and I feel that any game that makes you WORK for the good parts is not worth my time. If it wasn't for the great sound design I would have stopped playing it long ago. In fact because of that excellent sound design I won't dare play it on the train for fear of missing out on a funny sound clip. The comic book guy with his game cliches are funny. I won't spoil them for you.

So yeah, I'm only playing this game to hear clips. Fighting enemies is a chore and I don't feel in control. It's button mash. The arcade game has tighter controls than this. Also, the characters I've played so far are slow. Well, with the exception of Homer's blob ability which has a boost, that is. But you need to power up a bar to use it which to me is way too limiting. The bar drains too quickly.

At least the graphics are pretty. The sprites are prerendered from what I'm guessing are assets from the console versions. There are also many cut scenes. The game does FEEL like the show. I don't get that "they shoehorned this shit to fit within the context of a game" feeling I usually get from licensed games. It's better than most but has a ways to go.

Hopefully the next game is as fun to play as it is to listen to. I would call it average at most.

If this game gets any better I'll let you know. But like I said, you shouldn't have to work so hard to get to the "good parts." That's just shitty game design to me. In fact, NO forms of entertainment should do that. They should hook you as SOON as possible.

Having finished the Simpsons game I can appreciate what they tried to do. I didn't feel like the DS game was a rush job or a quick cash-in. It felt like there was a real team behind it and that they really tried to do as much as they could.

The Simpsons actually fulfills a longtime dream of mine. I've always wanted to know what it would be like to play an action/platform game where all the sprites were different. You get to see that in the Duff Gardens levels. It's pretty fucking cool and I wish it was done more. Then again, with hundreds of Simpsons characters "all they had to do" was render the assets from the console game and voila! Of course it's more involed than that but compared to coming up with characters from scratch there's no question why you don't see it more often.

Though, the enemies all fight the same so they might as well have been the same sprite. Also the levels are broken up into screens. So, you'll see the same enemies on the next screen again. Still, it was cool.

I don't know how many other platformers EA has done but they saw fit to break a few other conventions. I like that they don't keep count of your lives. If you fuck up, you're respawned from a checkpoint. There are a lot of checkpoints in the game. You get less as the game progresses. I think this is fair seeing as how sometimes the controls make the game more difficult than it actually is. I also like that Bart's slingshot is auto-aimed. This game is sorely lacking a turbo button, though.

Also, by this they avoided the game from becoming a collect-a-thon. You're still collecting things but you don't NEED them to progress. It more for unlocking bonus pictures and Pet Homer items.

Theres two EXTREMELY HALF-ASSED touch screen moments that I won't even bore you with. The rest of the time you use the stylus to control Marge and Lisa's abilities. There's also another part I won't spoil for you.

There's a lot at poking fun at games and maybe even homages. Don't you fucking tell me Bart's cape isn't a fucking homage to Super Mario World; I kept trying to glide with the back. There's a lot of jokes in here and I'm not going to mention a one. I won't even allude to them. It would be almost as bad as when they show you the best shit in a trailer for something.

I would say playing through to the end was worth my time. The cut-scenes and voice clips were funny. EA's art team clearly put everything they had into this. Not once did the world look like it was built from tiles. And I actually felt like I was playing through an episode! And in the end, isn't that the goal of a licensed property? It's actually FUNNIER than the show's been in a long time.

The game is short but sweet. Best Simpsons game since Arcade, confirmed. (Not better than, just best since.)

Okay, I got questions. Please bear with me because I'm a total noob with this handheld system:

- What's the difference between a DS and a DS Lite?
- Should I worry about region stuff with a DS?
- ROMs? Apparently for the DS and not the PC. I now ask, how is that done?
- Recommend me some games to down--er, get for if/when I finally get a DS of my very own.

bungiefan

DS Lite has a bigger stylus, different D-Pad, multiple brightness settings for the light, digital instead of analog sound control (four settings instead of a slider, from what I hear), and the start and select buttons are placed on the left hand.

No Nintendo handheld has ever been region-locked. DS is no different.

You need some sort of rewritable media to stick in the DS or GBA slot and a means to boot it. Then you just put the ROMs on it. This topic pretty much mentions the current devices for such. I use an R4DS with a 2 GB Patriot microSD card.

Specify more what type of game you like. There's a lot to choose from, with about 1650 ROM releases out now. Also, note that there's nothing to block you from using ROMs for Nintendo WFC play.

One difference worth noting is that the DS Phat uses the clicky style buttons like the GBA SP, while the DS Lite uses the more traditional "softer" buttons. The clicky ones don't have the same sensitivity, and the traditional ones can naturally wear down a bit faster. It's a pick-your-poison type thing, but the Lite is still better in comparison, IMO.

Every other factor I can think of falls in favour of the Lite, though.

So... after playing a few battles of FFXII:Levenanto wingsu i can say that so far the game is simple but nice, here is what i know so far:

-You can control up to 5 main characters per battle (Leaders)
-Each leader can have some summons at his command.
-You can Summon monsters from special tiles in the battlefield.
-The gameplay is quite simple, you have 3 kinds of units: melee, ranged and flying types, and each one is good vs another melee>ranged>flying>melee
-You can equip stuf in your leaders, weapon, armor and an artifac wich also has efect on that leader summons.
-There is ranged unit/summon that heals instead of dealing damage (Penelo)
-You have to mine in battles to get raw materials, with wich you make new stuff, also need to find the books with the recipes for the new stuff. The thing is that mining a resource doesn't take longer than a few seconds so is not a big deal.
-Battles have diferent objectives: Get here, kill all, kill X guy, you name it.
-The is a world map, so you can where to go or fight in old locations for exp.
-The controls are ok, and you can make commands quite well.

That's pretty much what i know, the game is nice, not groundbreaking but entertaining.

Reminds me of Fort Condor. I'm guessing that's probably some type of RTS convention?

Shadowless

I think it's more like a cheap insta-strategy technique used in Japanese games a lot.

In general, it seems pretty nice if units have at least one strength, and at least one weakness. The most simple case is the RPS 1 < 2 < 3 < 1 situation. But Advance Wars is a good example on the DS of how it can be made a little more complex. Every unit has a few good matchups and a few bad matchups - and even when you get a huge juggernaut, it will have weaknesses in the form of dependence on support units, prohibitive costs, etc.

I've been playing Revenant Wings, too. It's fine. A lot of spit and polish, not a whole lot of actually deep strategy. Hell, there aren't any real decisions in it, yet. I'm 1/3 through the game, by the way.

Oh, RW also has a fire < water < elec < wood < fire thing going on, but I don't know what the hell they want for that. A cookie? It doesn't bring much strategy to the game.

Basically, it's always the same thing: Bring your whole army over to kill a small group of guys without attracting the attention of another group of guys. Wait a little bit, repeat. But then, what other RTS game are you going to be playing on your DS? That's what I thought.

The rest of the game is pretty neat, though. Nice graphics and sounds, good controls, forgettable plot with stupid-fied child characters (so far), ...

I'll probably beat it, if only 'cause I'm already 35% of the way through.

D.Knight
24th November 2007, 05:39 AM
Shadowless is right about everything that he said.

Another example of this kind of strategy is Fire emblem, where there is the Sword > Axe > Spear > Sword system.

The thing is i would like to see a starcraft-like RTS in the DS, hell i want to play Starcraft on the DS the stylus should be able to handle it, the only concern i see would be the size of the units considering the small size of the screen but it could be playable.

This game is really fun. The best way to play a game like this is not to try to hold the ds AND control with your left. Reason being your right will be occupied with stylus. So now the left has to support all that weight. Lie the DS on you lap or a table or other surface and THEN you can play properly.

God, I love the completive aspects of it. There's a leader board for every planet. I'm surprisingly placing in the top 50 every time. My name is Utils.

EDIT: Their online leader board is a piece of shit. I'm all over the place, though. Some planets don't even have names in them yet.

I wonder if I can get /v/ and /b/ to start ranking in as anonymous. I think I try changing my name to anonymous to see what happens to my score on Kappa.

NO$GBA is nice, it plays GBA & DS roms and lets the mouse be the stylus.

Haha, I was reading the mod, you don't need it to use them, it just makes your entire wacom tablet = your screen instead of it emulating the mouse.

The Japanese rom was released today. Haven't tried it yet. But i'm guessing if you liked the demo, you can't go wrong with the full game. However the game isn't that long according to several reviews.

<edit> I completed the game earlier this evening and i can confirm it's not very long (6 hours 48 for me), although i have to admit i rushed through the text, since i can't understand Japanese anyway. I did take my time in the earlier chapters to get familiar with some of the gameplay elements and to find out where i had to go. Even without any knowledge of the Japanese language the game is easy to figure out.

Since i suck at writing, here's 2 reviews. I agree on all pros and cons from the reviews.

M3 Real 'Perfect Bundle' user here. I got this bundle because it comes with a slot 1 flashcart (which uses Micro SDHC cards) and with both a seperate slot-2 gba/ram expension and rumble expension card. Works like a charm on all roms (and homebrew) i've tested on it so far.

I went for this package because it comes with both earlier stated expension packs, which saved me the hassle to buy seperate expension packs on the long run. Also the fact that it supports larger Micro SDHC cards (4GB, 8GB) is a feature i was interested in.

If you want to find a flashcart that suits your needs, you might be interested in the following site, which has reviews of various flash cart kits:
http://www.gbatemp.net/

From what i've heard most flash kits are an okay buy nowadays. R4s are very popular, as are Cyclo ds, M3/G4. I guess you can't go wrong on any of them. But be sure to read what you exactly want, since some carts can't do everything. Also If a game doesn't work there's usually an update available sooner or later for every flashcart.

Be aware though that some older cards come with built-in memory (512mb - 1 gb), which can't be updated. So i can recommened a flashcart which you fit with a memory card of your own. Speaking of older carts. Some require seperate carts/for passme/bootcards, which is a hassle as well.

D.Knight
5th April 2008, 06:19 AM
I have been playing this game called Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the warlords, and it turned out to be quite addicting, it's like magic meets panel de pong, you fight on panel de pong games and earn mana to cast spells by uniting 3 or more gems or do damage to your enemy by conecting skulls, it has a so so history and you can buy equipment that give you special effects or bonus during the fights and can also capture monster to learn more spells or to use them as mounts to give you more bonusses, so far i am quite addicted to the darng game so annyone that likes magic or panel de pong should give this thing a try.

Edit: Forgot to mention that it has a world map to go from town to dungeon etc, you can also wage war to other countrys/castles and you can collect runes to forge your own items.

PS: Is also for PSP but i believe that the stylus beats the bigger screen on this one.
