Even if the PS3 version gets an upgrade with the new Ver.C features and such, I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't get the online play. I've heard speculation that they wouldn't do online VS on the PS3 as it would undermine their arcade business, and while I really don't know if there's any truth to that, there is precedence with stuff like Power Smash 3 which only had online in the 360 version.

Everything the Xbox360 version's getting:
・ Addition of Online Versus Mode
・ Addition of rank that only appears online
・ Support voice chats
・ Addition of online rankings
・ Ranking clip data (replays) can be browsed
・ More CPUs and balance adjustment in Quest Mode
・ More items to equip on the characters
・ Enhanced performance in DOJO Mode
・ Realized battles played by carrying in save data to VS Mode [the game will track your win/loss stats in versus mode, unlike the PS3 version]
・ Support controller vibration
・ Support analog stick
・ Additional recording of the commentary voice
・ Addition of commentary feature on EU version
・ Support Achievements and rich presence
・ Support downloading contents in the marketplace
・ Support Xbox 360 antaliasing
Can the PS3 really get all that in one affordable patch?

Sometimes I feel like Sega still has beef with Sony for taking them out of the majors.
I'm pretty sure they still do,but when it comes to a professional relationship it seems like Microsoft and Sega are best buddies.
Ever since Sega became a third party company Microsoft gave them a lot of support by stepping up their titles like Jet Set Future and a localization of Shenmue 2 for the U.S.
Also Peter Moore who was formerly with Sega during the Dreamcast days became Microsofts PR spokesman for the Xbox and 360,but recently stepped down.
Sony on the other hand doesn't seem to be close knit with any third party developers(especially now) and have rumors of being pretty demanding on bigger titles.Just taking a look at all the news of PS3 exclusives becoming multiplatform or totally being canceled proves it at the moment.
I still wouldn't hold out on the PS3 version getting some kind of upgrade in one way or another.Either through getting a brand new disc or downloading a patch.Sega has the opportunity to get some extra sales out of the people who bought the original along with some new ones.
EDIT:Version C Arcade Commercial.Gives you an idea what to expect in the 360 version at least

I want an answer to this- when it comes to customization options in VF5, is it still the ridiculous requirements like win 20 games on Very Hard without backdashing, or has it changed to a money/point/item system like Tekken has?
Internet
18th July 2007, 07:05 PM
No, it's just pretty random now. There are different types of items you can get so you know based on the color of the treasure chest which TYPE of item you are playing for "worthless, valuable, or ultra rare*.
You can also spam 2 player mode for items.
Caj
18th July 2007, 07:21 PM
There is also a trick where you line up your wins and loses by 7s
Example:107 wins 37 loses
Doing gives you the chance of having a Sega Air Balloon hover over the map.Once you see it you can go into any arcade and challenge any rank and get 10 item battles in a row.Once your wins line up to 7s again:117 wins and 37 loses still intact, you can exit out of the arcade to get another chance of having the blimp appear and repeat the process.
The trick is about 70-90% guaranteed to work most of the time.On my friends PS3 I was able to get about 20% of Sarahs items won from battles in about a couple hours of work. With VF5 coming on the 360 though, theres a chance that the trick might be taken out.
Internet
18th July 2007, 07:57 PM
Well, it sounds purposeful, I don't see why they would take it out. But I'm glad you told me what that fucking balloon was for, I've only seen it once or twice and had no idea it was so valuable and meaningful.

A bit more details involving VF5 for 360 and its online play
http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=6618&Itemid=2
"[AM2] felt that with the 360 they could make online happen, and with a lot of trials and tests and experiments figured out a way to do it where there's no lag--well extremely minimal lag, almost unnoticeable--so we were quite shocked when they told us it would be online, actually. It was a surprise.
I call BS on this until I play it for myself or get some impressions from actual VF players.Other than that it seems like most people were correct with VF5 being "rushed" by both Sony and Sega to get it out asap for the PS3.I also think the only reason they were able to get "online working" is because Xbox Live is doing the majority of the work for them and they don't have to worry about running their own servers.

just an aside, short of rpg, fps and rts style games there's no actual "servers" used in online gaming aside from matchmaking (which could easily be accomplished with the PSN and the PS3's friend list) so I would think that patching the ps3 version with ver. c and online versus is feasable, but those lazy cocksuckers at AM2 probably won't do it

I'll probably give in a buy a cheap referb 360 (with warranty)for VF5.The only thing I'm worried about is that the control options being limited as fuck for the 360,which sucks considering how horrible the original controller is for fighters.
Theres no fighter pads, theres only a crummy doa stick and the new VF5 one is the exact same model with new coating, and the only controller converter thats around goes for $100+ I think.

The PS3 pad pisses me off with VF5. I always used the shoulder L2/R2 buttons for certain attacks, and they're so damn sensitive with the PS3 pad that I'll often end up jabbing or doing something shit and retarded just because my fingers have lightly brushed them.
I could, of course, turn them off. I just don't feel like relearning a new button layout when I used this one so much in VF4.
For instance, I was getting severely irritated that Vanessa wasn't doing what I wanted her to near the end of a match - it wasn't until the next round I realised that I'd swapped into the offensive stance without intending to after a light brush of the L2 trigger.
Not that I'm holding out much hope for the 360 Dpad, mind you.

I had those sensitivity issues too with the pad at first, but after a couple weeks I was able to get use to it.Occasionally I might slip but that rarely ever happens now.The 360 controller on the other hand is an abysmal design for your typical fighter imo.The shape doesn't really feel right and the d-pad is sinked in so much making diagonals a chore to handle. It also seems like Microsoft is very very stingy with which 3rd party companies can even make accessories for the 360.

yeah I wouldn't hold my breath for that (or even a downloadable patch/upgrade to ver c/d/whatever via PSN)
I'm pretty confident that sega had the 360 version of vf5 in production for longer than they let on and just bullshitted out a ps3 version on to get in on the launch window money, because there's just too many problems fixed in the new revision to believe anything else
but I guess if they wanna spit on the ps3 owners by keeping that version inferior I will spit right back at them and just pirate that motherfucker on 360

Finally the question on whether its possible for a PS3 patch has been asked in some of the one on one interviews with AM2 during the GC07 convention.Too bad it's very vague and not confirmed to be in development.
http://www.totalvideogames.com/articles/GCA_12052.htm
TVG: With that in mind then, how frustrating was it to release the PlayStation 3 version of Virtua Fighter 5 in Japan without online functionality?
In the case of PlayStation 3, our first priority was to convert Virtua Fighter 5 from the arcade onto [the system] as soon as possible. To achieve that purpose we had to give up the development of the online mode - we'd love to try if there was time and the budget but unfortunately, we had to give up on that idea. AM2 are sorry to PS3 users - a lot of people say that it'is one of the missing things from the version.
TVG: Is it something that AM2 can solve with a patch?
No doubt.

Tinfoil hat here but don't you think it is in Sega's arcade division best (financial) benefit not to release ver C (at least) on the Japanese PS3. Considering that it is a possibility that instead of going in the arcades players can just hangout at each other's houses/tiny apartments playing their PS3s all day then wasting thousands of hundred yen in the arcades.
Still if thats the case (which probably is not), they should at least release version C for non-Japanese ps3 owners.

the arcade scene in japan isn't just going to dry up if a console game goes online that has a concurrent arcade release
the bottom line here is that sega would have to put effort into patching the ps3 version to revision C, which apparently they'd rather not do

The scene in Japan is such that arcade > home console. It has to do with culture: Remember that most houses are small and cramped, so there is less incentive to invite friends over to play games. Not when there are arcades within a few minutes walking distance of any train station.

That's kind of surprising - the 360 pad isn't killing all my moves. Backdashing into a double palm strike with Akira's the only thing I'm really having trouble with, SpoDs are coming out regularly and so are Dragon Lances.

All I can say is that the dpad is a fucking lost cause unless you do the mod,but surprisingly the Left Analog works pretty well and after a bit of practice I was able to get SPODs with Akira and Flamingo cancels with Sarah out like I can on a stick and dpad. With the fixed AA things do look a bit smoother than the PS3 version but the color contrast seems to be a bit darker(on my tv at least)
Anyway, does anyone know if there are any third party controllers with a decent dpad?Even though I can use the analog fine,I'm still lacking a bit when it comes to how fast my inputs come out when compared to a dpad.

It's funny you should say that. I tried using the d-pad for the VF5 demo and found it worked well enough, even if it wasn't quite up to Dual Shock standards. However, I also played DOA4 for the first time a couple days ago and the d-pad is absolutely horrendous for it. Strange.

From most player reviews for the Hori stick I've seen comments that its good for basic movements and techniques, but for more advances techniques that need good precision it isn't that great.
I was able to find a custom stick while looking around on the SRK forums,

It's probably the best quality you can possibly get but it comes at a hefty $150+ price tag, which I'm not really willing to spend on just a stick since I'm naturally more comfortable with a dpad.

Played it a bit today, wasn't able to try Live enough to get a solid opinion, but it seems like it might be decent if you make sure to play close-range games. Played mostly with people in France and Italy ranged between "borderline acceptable" and "fucking annoying", but a friend said that within Sweden it seems to usually work fine. The difference in graphics isn't in any way enormous, and ver.C doesn't seem to have brought with it any earth-shattering changes either. I want to get it eventually, for the added items and improved AI if nothing else, but I'm not really in any hurry.
The stick feels pretty good. A little different from what I'm used to, and retardedly enough the button layout does not match the default in the game (complicated further by a couple of really stupid design decisions in the game), but all things considered it's by all means a decent stick. The buttons aren't as sensitive as I like them, but unless you're super anal about how you want your stick, you should be fine with it.

When it comes to this version of VF5 for the 360,it looks like Sega has(purposely) cut us a bit short of the current Version C out in arcades when it comes to items and certain options. It seems like we are gonna be 2-4 updates behind the arcade version and will have to shell out extra cash to get them as downloadable content.

Well, for starters, it lacks KO Trial, quest orders and image demos, just like the PS3 version does. But it also lacks Bingo, the ability to combine multiple outfits and probably a few other things introduced in Ver.C in the arcades. Image demos in particular seems like it would've made alot of sense for online play, and the omission of the new customization options seem pretty inexplicable to me. :/ But hey, it's still VF. :)

Nah, the bingo feature's really neat. Basically losing a match gives you a number to fill in on your (virtual) bingo card, and 5 in a row equals a free item or gold. But then anything to speed up item collecting (certainly in the PS3 version) would've been a good thing.
A friend of mine says his VSHG worked on his PC right off the bat, but I haven't been able to get mine to work. Mine's from the first shipment of supposedly faulty sticks though, so it might be because of that - who knows.

I played my first 50 matches or so today as well and yeah, it's pretty fun. There seem to be more than enough players on at any given time (I played for about 2 hours total in the morning and in the evening and had absolutely no trouble finding competition). There's also a nice mix of skill levels online right now. There are people who are obviously new to the game - spamming punches as if their life depended on it - as well as some more experienced players, so I didn't get bored but also not frustrated by some of the more bitter defeats I suffered.
I did notice the lag though. Even in the best conditions I had to adjust my timing a bit so my recoveries and evades could turn out right (especially if I wanted to evade at the end of a string) - sometimes there were small hiccups that swallowed my inputs as well. It's still really good, especially since I finally get to play real people after some time, but I can sort of see where the original notion that SEGA had with respect to online play came from.
In any case I'll second Jigsaw's comments about the Hori stick. It's quite nice and unless you play at an incredibly high level (in which case you'll probably whine more about network latency or the latency of your hdtv) you'll be fine with it.

I played a bit so far and it's pretty nice. I really want a different controller though. Maybe a little more practice will alleviate some of my problems. Hopefully.
The opening movie is lulz.

XD I got it today (and was surprisingly pleased!). One of the random Quest Mode opponents was named "Killacam" and he used Jeffry. I was amused.
Also, anyone notice how Vanessa's new voice is the same as the president's secratary from Metal Wolf Chaos? XD I was SO amused by that. I keep waiting for her to go "MISTER PRESIDENT!!!". I like her old, more gruff voice better but this amuses me greatly.
Yeah, lack of kickboxing aside, Vanessa doesn't look so bad in-game. She's one of the few (only?) female characters they weren't afraid to give a skin texture to and her skin is still kinda dark (I hear there's an item that actually darkens it further, is this true?). Also, the short brown hair makes her look sorta like Lisa ^_^
But most surprising of all, I did an online match...AND IT WORKED! Sure there was alittle lag, but this was the first online fighting game that was actually PLAYABLE on my connection! Bleach DS and DOA4 both had MAJOR difficulty on my connection, but VF5 is running playably good! Even Puzzle Fighter and (especially) Lumines didn't run well on my connection, but this is okay! Sure it's still too hiccuppy for REAL play, but random player matches shall be fun ^_^ (My first match was against a black guy who thought he was hot shit. Shame I didn't have my mic in! XD)
Still, I now have a vendetta against Brads :P Every time one shows up I'm sure to be praticularly aggressive in the hopes of beating the kickboxing out of him. Such a fag. You know he's bangin' Lion behind the scenes. *punt*

Picked it up earlier today at Gamestop right when it came in from UPS.I ended up playing at my school campus game room before I went in for work, besides a couple of issues like not having more options to mess around with online, there wasn't much lag at all from about 20 matches I got in.
The only other issue that concerns me is this god forsaken controller -_-.The analog stick is good for getting basic moves and combos out fine but evading consistently, crouch cancel moves(ex:Akiras Byakko) and doing throw escapes is a bitch right now.If I can't get comfortable with this controller I might just save up and get a custom made joystick and be done with it.

<uk> lol i just had a fight against sarah in quest mode in her hooker outfit
<uk> and her player quote was "not in the face!" :s
Just tried out online mode too. I could find matches easy enough using the Quick Match option, but most of them gave me an error message when I tried to join them. It's probably just my new ISP being lame again though. :/
Finally managed to get a match going with another Eileen player and it was pretty laggy. I lost that one. I created my own game and that went much smoother; managed to squeak out a victory against a Blaze scrub. :)
This is probably a stupid question, but I'm too lazy to go dig up my 360 instruction book: how do I chat over the headset? Do I have to hold a button down when I'm talking or something? The guy I was playing didn't seem to have a full grasp on it either.
Also! Did we already post our XBL handles? 'Cuz we should. I'm "teh dark hadou".

NIGGA STOLE MY KICKBOXING!
Yeah, Vanessa's new styles are just lame in comparison. The "Defensive Style" movelist is tiny and alot of moves are shared between the two styles. Lame. I still love her though.

I get that alot, but I think that's because you either entered while they were quitting or trying to invite someone. Happens in all 360 games with me :P

XD I understand. NO ONE talks while playing RRXX so I was confused on if it even worked and asked the same question awhile back! Just talk into the mic and make sure that the switch on the part that goes into the controller is flipped appropriately. No button needs to be held down.

This is a stupid waste of 300 MS points unless Sega releases a better pack.
Internet

Awesome how there are going to be 9 more of these packs at 4 dollars each that just unlocks content that is already on the disc, meaning that a complete unlock of the game is an extra 40 whole dollars. That is complete fucking whoring and anyone who endorses that is a monumental idiot. We should not encourage this kind of buttcheeks from developers. Eat a dick, Sega.

Yeah, I believe some of the shit that these unlock codes do give you the rare shit that you usually need the Orb Discs for.
Caj
20th November 2007, 12:57 PM
They are purely keys for content that is locked out on the disc. They are completely separate from every other item that you can normally get through item battles and orb discs. Not only Sega but other companies are pulling this shit with download keys instead of fresh content. It will only get worse if people accept it and buy it.

It's just for intros/winposes. All the changes in version D are cosmetic (with the exception of the two new modes which are just that...)
It's kinda weird given how concerned the fanbase is with gameplay rather than aesthetics.
On an unrelated note, reading about the story for VF, I found out Pai was an action star and that made me realize that there are no female asian action stars that rival their male counterparts (like Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, etc.) I can't even name one.

Also for the people who didn't know,Sega also released an FAQ to go along with the update.
http://www.shacknews.com/docs/press/20080116_vf5_faq.x
January 2008 Title Update, we added many of the features that we hoped to have in the original release. There are no plans for further updates at this time.
Will online play be added for the PS3 release?
As the PS3 release was a launch title, the specifications for online title updates were not yet finalized and we were unable to include it in the title. Unfortunately, that means that releasing an online update enabling online VS play is not possible.
Why are there no penalties for people who pull their cable in Ranked Matches to disconnect and prevent a loss in the Xbox 360 release?
There is in fact a significant penalty for those who disconnect during a Ranked Match. If you disconnect, experience points you're saved to reach the next level of online play rank (1st dan, Gladiator, etc.) are significantly reduced.
Moreover, leaderboard rankings are based on total points. This includes a point for a loss. So those disconnecting are ultimately harming their standing on the leaderboards.
Why did SEGA release DLC on the Xbox 360 game disc?
Dozens of new items were added to the Xbox 360 release, and only a handful of them require a download. The downloadable items would not have been included in the game if they were not selected to be downloadable, and including them on the disc was the only possible delivery mechanism that could be implemented within the development schedule.
If they were not included on the disc, an online distribution item distribution method would have to be created to allow players who didn't download the items to view the items on their opponents who had them equipped.
SEGA's goal with the downloadable content was to measure the level of interest in downloadable content, so that we could take it into account for future products.
Is SEGA planning to release some of the cool Japanese version C outfits as DLC for Virtua Fighter 5 for Xbox 360?
The DLC is complete as of Item Pack 3. There are no further plans for DLC at this time.
SEGA's goal was to concentrate on the core gameplay and make the best, lowest latency, online gameplay possible. Spectator mode and other additional online features can add to latency in online play.
Why is feature "X" not in the game? (For example, why is there no record / playback feature in the DOJO mode?)
We always have to balance the possible feature set versus the title's schedule and development resources. Sometimes decisions on what to cut and what to leave in are difficult and painful. We are always listening to our user base, and all feedback will be taken into account for future titles.
So in other words VF5 for the 360 may be considered "complete".When it came to these questions,it seemed like the Sega rep danced around most of them.
The major nitpick I have though is the record/playback response. There should have been no excuse for that feature to be completely excluded for the PS3 and 360 versions since it's been a staple in almost every other fighter since the late 90s.
I also couldn't imagine it being impossible, time consuming or critically throwing off the budget to code and put together.Imo losing the polish of VF4:Evos Quest and Training modes wasn't as bad as losing such a simple option.
In the end,if everything is considered true, there won't be any real updates until a console version of VF5 Evo is released, which would probably be close to early-mid next year the earliest.
Also, the constant mention of "future titles" doesn't bare too much with SEGA outside of the VF series.Just about everything else released in the past 5-6 years has been considered ok,meh or just plain shit for a long time now.

http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/7509/topthrowescapes3wr6.png
It's very handy for anyone having a hard time guessing which inputs to enter first. The graph lists the top 4 that you should enter and which order you should do it in.Also I would like to note that Sarahs d/b throw should be the first to throw escape since A LOT of players like to do mixups into that particular throw.

So I completely forgot this was ever released. But I'm getting it now. How's the online play? Is it easy to find a game or is no one playing? And are there a lot of disconnecting fags?
Spiral Viper
6th February 2008, 05:15 PM
I've had one person disconnect, and even then the person said it was an accident and I played them again. I imagine they're out there like anything else. Online play as far as latency goes is pretty solid, finding a match sometimes requires creating a match and then waiting at times.
