Review: Psychic Force |
First of all, I must say Im not exactly a Playstation fan and I’ll almost always look for every flaw I can find in their games especially fighters. Ok, now that i got that off my chest i can proceed to tell you about Psychic Force. At first I expected a cheesy fighter like Dark Rift for N64, but boy was I wrong…
The beginning anime intro is unbelievably well drawn, after picking my jaw off from the floor… I realized this is only the intro, the game could look completely different; so I press start and prepared for the worst, to my surprise I was greeted with 4 gameplay options, Arcade, Story, Training and VS. mode. Training mode is just like the one in KI Gold, you get to practice combos, super moves etc… It even shows the amount of damage you cause on your opponent! Story mode is the same as arcade mode, except your treated with a dialogue between you and your opponent (nothing special). And if you don’t know what versus mode is I’ll leave it up to your imagination…=)
Anyways, I pick arcade mode as I usually do with most fighters. There are 8 characters you can choose from: Burn (he is the Ryu of this game), Wendy, Emilio, Sonia, Wong, Brad, Genma and Gates. They all are well drawn and animate well, but what makes this game unique is that instead of being confined to the floor you fly in the sky but must stay inside of a psychic wall (which if you touch during battle will hurt you and leave you open for an attack). So not only do you have to worry about getting hit by your opponent, but you have to make sure to stay away from wall also. The story is fairly simple but at the same time new and fresh, you are part of psychic force, a group of psychics that were used by the government and were lead by a master psychic who promised them a better future but later on their leader also decides to eradicate the human race, so now the psychics must fight to save the human race. (hmm…sounds kind of like X-men’s storyline…)
Now unto the graphics and sounds…the 3D backgrounds are very well done for a playstation game and so are the sound effects and music of each level BUT (and its a BIG BUT…) the voices are horrendous!!!! Emilio, who at first looked to me like a female was in actuality a male but his voice is even more confusing!! Maybe it was male voice actor trying to sound like a little girl (this guy has no skills in doing voices, they must have found him on the street and offered him the job…) but that’s no reason for him to sound like he’s reading a dialogue from the palm of his hand. The voices were so bad I almost returned the game, but I gave it a second chance. What I found, in conclusion, was a well rounded game, the gameplay is very redundant, you’ve got a light and heavy attack, both just throw an automatic fireball (one is supposedly heat seeking but i sometimes wonder…). You also have special moves which are cool to watch but other than that its very plain. If you want a deep game I recommend Tekken 2 or KI Gold. I recommend you to at least rent it though, its fun for about a day and then the novelty wears off. Even the combos are not different for everyone(Zzzz…). Let me sum it up for you: good graphics, good music, bad gameplay, disgusting voices, excellent intro and fun and easy to learn. Not as bad as Dark Rift but not as deep as most good fighters.
