Review: Marvel Superheroes vs. Streetfighter

Here it is. The absolute LAST hurrah on Saturn. Although the last US Saturn title has yet to be released (Working Design’s eternally delayed Magic Knight Rayearth), the Saturn has been a “dead system” officially for over 6 months now in the U.S. Meanwhile, the Japanese Saturn has continually received grade A titles, even after it’s supposed “death”. However, with the release of Capcom’s 2nd vs. title, Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter, the Saturn’s “coming soon” list now looks barren. With all that hoopla, is MSF any good?

Well, yes and no. MSF is, once again, a beautiful translation. Ludicrously low load times (although not quite at Vampire Savior levels… about 3-4 secs.), arcade perfect animation, and arcade accurate voices and effects.

Not only is this incarnation arcade perfect, it’s BETTER than arcade perfect. The secret characters are easier to access, the game is tougher than it’s arcade counterpart, a predictable collection of extra options (all the ones from XSF essentially), and one can (after a couple of runs through the game in the different modes) use Cyber-Gouki. (Not my cup of tea, but then again…)

Why then my “and no”? Well, Marvel/SF is not exactly Capcom’s best effort. Not only is there not a SINGLE original character design (Norimaro isn’t their character as one might recall), but there isn’t a single new background either. Bottom line… this game is a creative black hole. While this might not account for much to some… it makes a big difference in my game enjoyment.

Ho well, apart from that small problem I have, take everything I said in my XSF Saturn review, add a smidge from my MSF Arcade review, and you’ve got my MSF review. Recommended for the vs. games fans out there.

Bottom Line: Unbelievable translation, unbelievably average game.
