Review: Fighters’ Megamix |
What happens when you get an already established fighting game, you mix it up with another established fighting game, add more options than you can shake a stick at, add new levels, new moves, more than 12 hidden characters and sell it really cheap? You get a winner, that’s what you get.
Sega of America is in deep need of selling hot titles in order to get the Sega Saturn into the hands of gamers everywhere. Fighter’s Megamix is one of the best fighting games on the Sega Saturn for many reasons.
Fighters Megamix combines the best from Virtual Fighter 2 and Fighting Vipers and then some more. All the characters from both games are present including Dural. In addition to each character’s arsenal of moves, the Virtual Fighter 2 characters obtained some of the moves available in Virtual Fighter 3 including some of the combos! Fighting Vipers characters also received new moves in order to balance the gameplay — great move Sega. The characters themselves are less blocky than they used to be, but are now much more pixelated (you lose some you gain some no?). Either way that’s something you should not worry about; what’s one little drawback like that going to do to the game?
The levels in Fighters Megamix are alright but never spectacular, they are rather plain actually with little detail. There are two different type of levels: (1) open levels give the Virtual Fighter characters the upper hand and (2) closed levels which give the Fighting Vipers characters the upper hand. Remember to use the closed levels to your advantage and the knowledge from playing Fighting Vipers comes in handy when playing Fighters Megamix. Also added to the game is a dodge button which allows you to move in or out of the screen just like other 3D fighting games available now.
As far as the options are concerned you have amount of rounds, controls, time limit and the whole nine yards. The game modes includes: Arcade, Versus, Practice, Survival Mode and Team Battle Mode all which add great replay value to the game.
Another interesting thing about Fighters Megamix is the fact that you can play with 12 different hidden characters from other Sega games. Among the games: Virtual Fighter Kids, Sonic Fighters (BLEH!), Virtua Cop, and even Daytona USA! Most of the hidden characters are funny and rather stupid! All of the Sonic Fighter characters are just plain cheap like Deku the gigantic Mexican jalapeno or Bean the duck. And what about Niku the menacing meat? There are a few characters though that are great: Janet from Virtual Cop, fully equipped with her gun; URA Bahn, a buffed version of Fighting Viper’s Bahn; and Siba a character that was originally planned to make its way into Virtual Fighter but was cut out. What about Daytona USA you ask? Well, let me not even mention it because I will explode… fighting with a car yeesh! I know it may sound negative, but the additions of these characters make the game humorous for a change.
Fighters Megamix is an excellent game in more ways than one. This is one of those games that will sell a system in a blink of an eye. If you have the money to get this game rush out to the stores and get yourself a copy while they still have it. This is a game that should not be missed.
