Review: Dark Legend |
Dark Legend for the Sega Saturn is a conversion of a very mediocre Data East arcade game of the same name. The game features 12 characters (boss included) which you can choose immediately and uses the six button layout of the Street Fighter series.
The characters in Dark Legend are a mix of Samurai Shodown and Fatal Fury. Unlike the SNK games however, the characters are bland as far as animation is concerned. The animation is very unstable with some very choppy movements by all characters. You would think that this is caused by the arcade to home translation, but let us just warn you that this game looks identical to the arcade counterpart. Most characters carry a weapon to battle and use it to their advantage in a variety of ways.
Dark Legends uses the scaling found in the SNK Samurai Shodown, and just like the SNK game, this game does it rather smoothly. However, such a technique in a fighting game is nothing but eyecandy. The backgrounds however, suffer tremendously for lack of detail and colors.
The music in this game is average at the most, but the sound effects are quite strong even for this mediocre game. All kicks, fireballs, tornado moves, and groans are loud and clear. The announcer is not annoying and actually sounds like a male… unlike one game I do not want to mention…
Special moves, combos, juggles, dizzies and air throws are included on the Sega Saturn game, but they are not as complex and original as Street Fighter’s. So if you are thinking about purchasing Dark Legend make sure you really want to have a complete Sega Saturn fighting game collection; otherwise stay away from this product before you feel ashamed of wasting $19.99 at the store…
