Review: Mortal Kombat Trilogy

MKT takes all the elements, stages, and characters from every MK game. If you liked the other MK games, just wait until you see this one! Many fans of certain characters who were gone from other MK games (Rayden) will be happy to know that they are back in. They’ve also got tons of stages and secrets to keep you playing this one over and over.

I was expecting stunning new graphics for all the characters, but the game was not done in the way of a sequel like that. Instead, they just use most of the graphics from the previous MK games. If you like those graphics, you will definitely like this game, if you don’t, you may not like it. There are some glitches with the graphics (like with Motaro’s head rip fatality). Sometimes other things look out of place, like they shouldn’t be there. The characters sometimes look pixely if you look closely enough, but when you are not straining to see that, it’s okay. I think that blacking the screen out when a fatality is being done was a very cheesy. If they can show Sub Zero ripping somebody’s head off in MK1, why can’t they do it now?

I have never been a big fan of the soundtrack to the MK games, so I can’t say much for the music. Actually, it doesn’t even really sound as good as the arcade. The volume on the music isn’t as loud, and it sounds a bit tinny. The sound effects, however, are extremely good. The sounds of swinging punches and kicks, and the screams of pain as a character gets hit by one. There are some sound effects that are not as good, but most of them are okay. One thing that isn’t as good as it could have been are the explosions. I mean this both graphically and by the sounds. When a character blows up from a fatality, the sound it makes is very unrealistic. It’s not a big deal, I just think they could have done better. Overall, the sound is alright in MKT.

MKT plays well, but not perfectly. Sometimes the combos can be hard to pull off. The brutalities are also hard to do. The controls are not as responsive as they could have been. For example, there is some delay when you walk one direction and then the other, or when you duck. Fatalities may take you some time to master, because you need to stand in the right spot, or they won’t work. Performing moves is easy, and if you put auto combos on, you can do some good combos, and you only have to tap one button. I wish some kind of a combo breaker was incorperated in MKT. They would have had to rip off KI, but it is a really good idea. It makes it so that combos are not a one way street.

This game is fun for a while, but later, it grows old. The gameplay doesn’t have much depth, so you can figure out what to do pretty quickly, then it’s hard to find other ways to win after that. The multi-player modes are fun. They are similar to the team games in KI Gold. The variety of finishing moves in the game make it more fun. Each character has many ways of finishing their opponents, adding to the fun factor.
