Review: Fighter’s Destiny |
Well, like I said in my first impression of this game: Its all hype with no substance. I still stand by my initial opinion. First of all, its not difficult to tell the game is trying to be a Tekken/Virtua Fighter clone, but thats besides the point. The graphics are poorly done. You are usually fighting on a square unlike Mace’s highly detailed 3D backgrounds. The game has some nice bit-mapped 2D backgrounds but nothing extraordinary. The nail in the coffin are the poor character designs (except for the cow, Ushi); I’ve seen better in Time Killers.
Your selection of characters include: Ryuji (an all rounder), Tomahawk (powerful), MeiLing (Quick), Ninja (Skillful), Abdul (an all rounder), Pierre (tricky), Valerie (aerial), Bob (powerful) and Leon (another all rounder). You can also select from 2 different costumes for each fighter as well as a choice between 5 modes of play: Vs., Com (you play against the computer, duh!), Vs. Battle (play against your best friend/enemy), Record Attack (I’ll talk about this later on), Master challenge (challenge the masters to earn the ability to learn their skills) and finally Training (Practice/Master your Martial arts).
Of all the options, Record Attack was in my opinion the core of the game. You pick between Survival (You must defeat 100 opponents), Fastest (you must defeat your opponents in under one min) and Rodeo (see how long you can stay in the ring). The Rodeo option is the funk, you’ve got to keep yourself in the ring while fighting off Ushi, the cow! Yes, thats right a cow! Ushi is also a hidden character in the game along with a couple of others (Hint*Hint). And for some strange reason I had more fun playing the Record attack challenges than the actual game, go figure.
The gameplay is you’re standard typical Tekken stuff with some dial-a-combos (Mortal Kombat?) thrown in for good measure. Im sorry, but when you can defeat your opponent with one knockdown move and earn 3 points for it, it takes away all the fun. The point feature is great and unique but where are the advantages? Its all garbage if you ask me. They could have just set up the game with 5 rounds and it wouldn’t have changed a thing in this game.
I know i might get a lot of hate mail for this review but Im telling you the truth. Even Wargods had better graphics than this game. And when you have games like Tekken, Marvel Vs. Capcom and Killer Instinct out there, you expect more than some cheesy scoring system.
